85 K100 - driveshaft won't disconnect from tranny

Hello! I'm working on a '85 salvage project after 30 years sitting in a garage....current task is checking & lubing the splines, at least from the final drive to the tranny output.

I followed the procedure laid out nicely by Lee here ,but couldn't get the driveshaft to pop off the tranny output, using Lee's hose clamp lever technique.

Then I proceeded to remove the swingarm so I could get a better purchase on the driveshaft. And despite some pretty firm pulling, it still won't come off!

Any suggestions on how to get this thing loose safely?

Thanks!

Is there a circlip up front there? Item 3 below; pic from thr MAX site.

Yes there is a clip in there that locks the driveshaft onto the trans output shaft. With the swing arm still in place and the final drive removed, I’ve used a firm grip on the driveshaft with vice grips and a firm rap from a hammer to pop it loose. Works for me every time. Each time I do a rear tire change, I pull the final drive and re-grease the driveshaft splines, both ends.

Borrow the large size slide hammer (2lb?) at a local auto parts store—most have a loan problem against a credit card deposit. Fasten the slide hammer to the rear of the driveshaft (a short length of chain and a bolt or two may come in handy) and give it a yank. Since the swingarm is out of the way you could heat the shaft in the front spline area with a MAPP torch if necessary. It sometimes takes a pretty good “snap” to pop the circlip loose, and there’s a good chance there’s some corrosion in there that’s adding to the problem.

Good luck,
DeVern

Hmm, I'm worried about stressing the end of the shaft with that kind of vice grip!

Things are probably rusty, including the little clip that engages the transmission output shaft. So if that were my bike I would do a couple of things. With the swingarm removed I would place some penetrating oil at the forward end of the driveshaft at the output shaft. Let it soak a little while. Then before trying to remove the drive shaft I would lightly tap it forward. This will loosen that little clip if it is rusted to its groove. Then I would find a way to pry rearwards from the front rather than yank backwards from the rear.
