2008 Get-in-Shape/Weight Loss thread

I like to ease into things. :ha

Down a few pounds, not much, probably well within the +/- of day to day life. But I did put some miles on the bicycle (das motorcyle ist kaput) and when I was done with the bag of cheese puffs, I didn't throw out an empty bag. :ha

I am afraid to get back on the scale.

I have spent the last couple of weeks moving the mustard revolution from Lilydale (the center of the known universe) to a new secret lair. In the process I have spent way to much time in fast food joints and buy quick and easy stuff from the deli and grocery store. These were treats in the past and turned into staples while in transition.

Today I went to the grocery store and did some serious set up shopping to get me back on track.

Tomorrow I am heading to the Big City (shhh, itÔÇÖs a secret, donÔÇÖt want to let the natives know they have a mustard revolutionary in their midst just yet) to purchase some things and shop for a bicycle.

I am not beatting myself up for this, just not at all certain I want to know how many hp I lost.

Wish me luck. :D

4 miles on the bike today. Lower overall cardio rate, but within my limits. Legs are feeling better and in the next couple weeks I should be able to start expanding my range. Right now, I need to go raise the seat. Man, my quads are killing me!

Bike computer says I consumed about 300 calories during that session.

I'm so sick of dieting
by Percy Dovetonsils

I'm so sick of dieting
I really feel bombastic.
There's candy without sugar,
Rolls without butter,
and lard that's made of plastic.

It's the lowering of calories I've really grown to hate
they're so low now they're shoved in under the plate.
Oh Suzette's were made for crepe-ing
and ice cream is to be caked.
Hawaii is great for vacation,
but Alaska was made to be baked!

May 1st was my 1st anniversary of my new lifestyle. Gail and I had a laugh at some pictures tonight.

How's this for change! :bliss:

Late to the party, but after sitting around all winter eating ice cream and doing nothing, I weigh (gasp) 241.5.

I put the numbers up on the freezer door to remind me what a hog I am.

Would like to see 220 by August.

Seems like a heck of a long way to go and don't even ask me about shopping where all junk food is on the end of the aisle or in the middle or at the checkout.

Update

Hey All,

I can't believe that no one has updated this thread in 2.5 weeks, so I will. I am back from Istanbul and Greece. Left on May 5 at about 215 lbs. While there, I stayed on the diet as best I could. What diet? I guess I never did post what I was eating. To keep blood sugar low and lose weight my diet is: No bread, potatoes, chips, beer, candy, deserts; very little cereal grains. I am eating mostly meat, raw vegetables, cheeze, and fruit that is lower in sugars. I do drink dry red wine (ya gotta live). I was able to do this fairly well in Greece, but ocasionally had to eat pita bread. On the tour we all did a lot of walking. A lot of it was up and down hills.

After nearly a month of not having a scale to check myself, today I weighed in at 211. :clap I actually lost weight (not much) on the trip. :thumb Since October I am now down 37 lbs. My daily blood sugar readings have been very good also. It looks like I will make my goal of 205 for the National.

How have the rest of you been doing for the last couple of weeks?? Any big losses??

I, however, had a hard couple weeks and celebrated in Conary fashion - I ate. TastyKakes aren't readily available on the west coast. How could I resist. My punishment was digging a 75 cubic foot hole in the back yard.

Vacations always do me in. I can easily gain 5lbs in a week.

The last three + weeks of moving and getting settled has added 18 lbs. So I am on track with you 5lb / week gain :D Now the trick is turning it around

I weigh in today. It appears that I might cross the 25 pound mark today.

If so, that means about 7 to go to goal of 175.

I have continued to try and eat right, but have had a few desserts on a trip to Columbus Sun thru today, I did get on the treadmill every morning while there and did do my yoga. I'm down to 208 pounds and 36" waist from 38" waist at my highest weight 218. I continue to walk/run on the treadmill and am up to 40 minutes from 30 minutes when I started at the middle of April. I am also lifting weights 3X a week now up from 2x when I started. I'm not that tall 6' but my chest is 46" from the weight lifting, so I will be happy to loose the spare tire and get down to whatever weight does that, I'm shooting for around 190, 195. I don't think I can ever by the lean/mean 175 lbs. I was as a high school football player. Oh well...

Ya'll need to read Gary Taubes' "Good Calories, Bad Calories," and check out the Eades Protein Power Diet. This high carb, lo fat bullshit, is just that!! and strength training will NOT displace fat, you'll get stronger and stay just as fat as you've been. Jogging/running will make you hungry, so you'll just eat more, and you've got to spend a helluva lot of time on the road to just burn off two 3" chocolate chip cookies. And I say this having a personal record at the 50 mile distance of 7 hours and 40 plus minutes at age 42. So unless you're burning off more than 6kcal/day in training, you're not gonna get away with 30' 3x/week of idiotic aerobics. Check out www dot ultimate-exercise dot com; www dot baye dot com and www dot slowworks dot net

And I say this at 70 years of age, 167.8# this AM w/ 10.8% body fat. I can row a 2k on my C2 in 9' any time I like, ride 50 miles on road bike any time I like (at an avg pace of 17.5mph), can sustain a max HR of 186 on the road bike (not the BMW) for 2' plus, and my training regimen is x1 per week high intensity strength training on each of 7 exercises, alternating each week between an A & B routine. My resting HR is 57, BP is 125/85, w/ a MAP of 88 today. Oh yes, my Cholesterol is 230, and when my doc told me I needed to go on statins I said "go to hell, cholesterol is not a disease." I eat 21 eggs / per week w/ canadian bacon, one slice at every other breakfast. one high protein smoothie for a treat mid-AM; two cans of tuna fish for lunch w/ a green salad and ice-tea; 3 large chunks of hard cheddar cheese and 4 crackers and 12 oz of cold water for a mid-PM snack, and I just finished a South Beach garlic herb chicken for supper w/ 3 5oz glasses of red wine. I'll have a glass of whole milk and 20 grams of protein whey for a late evening snack. that's a rough outline of my daily diet with foods bearing similar nutrient value.

Fitness is a bullshit industry and the majority of folks buy into the crap of too much work, not enough rest, and a crap diet, e.g., as recommended by the American Heart Association.

Just my two cents guys/gals :):dance

I really wish that I could have your dedication and discipline!! One little point (which is not meant to hijack this important thread in the least) What the hell is Canadian bacon???? We don't have that here. Maybe it's that round sliced stuff but we really have no such thing. Dang... do have to go to Shonee's fer it? -Bob

Maaaannnnn the gods have a strange sense of humor. I just had a dish of peppermint stick ice cream with home made fudge sauce with two of the pit crew before I sent them to bed. Then this thread pops up.
