2008 Get-in-Shape/Weight Loss thread

As am I. :ha

Anyone ready for the 2009 Get-in-Shape/Weight Loss thread? :ha
In. :thumb

But I have to admit to some backsliding. I was down below 205 at the National, reaching my goal. I actually made it below 200 for several days, held at about 203 for about a month. In September I took on a new job (see sig line) and my stress level went up, my walking routine became sporadic and then quit altogether. December hasn't been good. The blood sugar was up, not seriously, but up, and I was back at 210. :banghead :banghead This last Monday I strarted the power walks again and am working out with a cable/pulley weight machine. The last two days the blood sugar is back down and I am feeling better. :clap My dinner tonite at Misty's with an ADVrider group was a pork chop and salad. I am being good again. Now to get back below 200 before the Holiday season gets to me. :eat :drink :dance

Spent my first "retirement summer" building fences, landscaping , and setting up new place...most in the TX heat...My 32" waist pants started falling down as I was near 180...now, near Christmas, I am looking at my 34"s. :cry
Had a bathscale that did not look THAT bad, then stepped on the one at vet's office last week as the tech said " that is very accurate,we just had it calibrated" Holy Moly, 205! No more 2nd helpings and late night ice cream either!
Guess I will go start that east 400' fence...

Currently at 177.2. I'm 2.2 pounds from goal and have lost a bit more than 30 pounds, starting at 208.

For the first time in four or five years, I'm inside the BMI recommendations for my height.

Tina's down about the same amount and looks and feels wonderful. She's got a bit further than me to get to goal, but she's pretty well on it.

We went by last night and bought winter bicycle gear so we can continue to ride, even though it's getting chillier.

I bought a new pair of 34x34 Lee Rider jeans yesterday, the SAME size I have worn for 5 years. I can barely get into them, granted they will stretch out. I wadded them up and chucked them to the back of the closet.

Time to do this, in earnest, and it's called reduce quantity of what I consume and anything made of sugar do not go past my lips.

Thanks Dave for re-posting to this thread. You looked GREAT at Gillette, and give me hope I can, once again, swim in my 34x34 Lee Riders!

Setting at 200 lbs once again Ideal weight is 184

Who are you kidding, Dave??? Winter riding....in your neck of the woods that's just "cold weather riding" :stick

I've ridden my GaryFisher when it was down to 5 degrees and my eyelashes freeze. Once the snow/ice happens, it's back to the club for stationery stuff.

An age old question.....why is it guys have no qualms about disclosing their weight to the world:scratch

Happy Holidays to all!!

...so we can continue to ride...Kbasa

Dave:

My associate at work, who does tri's, has been riding to the office in the winter and just loves it. He got some gortex shoe covers and other special pieces of clothing for the really cold days, and ice tires. The only time he can't ride is when there's frozen ice ruts on the paths. He rides a hybrid.

Tina's got a Specialized Crossroads she really loves. I think she'll want to move up to a real road bike this spring, though. I've got a Gary Fisher Tassajara that I love, but I'd really like to have a real road bike, too. I was looking at bikes last night and fell in love with a Felt. It's really beautiful and even when I wasn't riding it, I'd enjoy just looking at it hanging on the wall, you know?

Anyway, I was just out for a short ride this morning. It's in the high 30s with some major wind here today and my ears were frozen by the time I got back. It's been about 5 or 6 weeks since I last rode, so I really felt clumsy and out of sorts for a while. It's going to be crummy and raining tomorrow, so it might be the perfect time for a little trail ride. :ha

Tina's got her bike set up in the guest bedroom with our CycleOps trainer. I need to start working with our training video since it's dark both when I leave and when I get home these days. I think I'd get more out of spending an hour training than I would watching tube. Work's sucking huge amounts of time, but I really need to make sure I'm physically healthy. It seems to help my mental state in a big way and helps me stay positive, even under stress. There's nothing like an hour of doing sprints on your bicycle to get you focused, is there?

...fell in love with a Felt...Kbasa

Felts are cool; they really are industrial art.

I bought my first decent road bike last year, a Lemond, and really like it. I've thought about going to an exotic, but can't justify it for the amount I ride.

...I really need to be sure I'm physically healthy...

+1. I find if I don't, I just run out of gas at work, and won't work on my tough files. I work out at noon, which splits my day in half and energizes me for the afternoon. I eat at my desk, to partially make up for the lost time.

You've abviously been disciplined in your fitness program; congratulations to you both.

Yeah. I agree. They had a couple Fujis there that were about the same price and specification, but man. Those Felts just left the CF weave exposed so you could look at it. The whole thing reminded me of an F117. It had that sort of brutal directness about its purpose.

The Fuji was spectacular as well and its Shimano rims were lovely to look at. They have a really low spoke count, which always fascinates me. But the Felt really made me want to hang it on the wall as art.

It's been a few weeks since I last rode and it felt really good to be in motion out in the world. I bought some winter riding gear so I can start riding/busing to work. I'll ride from here to the bus pad, take the bus down 101, get off at the Golden Gate Bridge and ride down the hill to Crissy Field and then along the Embarcadero to work. I need to join the 24 hour Fitness in my building so I'll have a place to shower. Just the reverse for going home. Should give me about 20 miles every time I do it, which is enough to keep me doing pretty well for the winter. I think it'll burn a couple thousand calories a round trip, if past experience is any indication. That'd be a nice buffer to have for wintertime pie consumption.

:D

Late In

Somehow I missed this thread last spring. Only found it this evening. I don't know about the rest of you, but I get fat in the summer from riding and lack of exercise. Before I got the beemer, I used to ride my bicycle 20-30 km before breakfast in the summer but now it's down to about 15 km. By the late fall (after riding all summer) I usually fatten up to about 152 pounds. With winter and the bike away, I hit the mall at 6:00 a.m. and power walk for an hour, five days a week. On two of those mornings after walking, I go to the local pool and do laps for a minimum of 30 minutes. On days that I don't swim, I lift weights at home after mall walking. Then I sit down for breakfast which takes the better part of an hour. I eat slowly. Breakfast is always a large fruit salad, a slice of toast, hot oatmeal, yogurt, coffee, sometimes a boiled egg and a glass of milk while reading a couple of newspapers.

A couple of weeks ago I started out at my usual fat weight of 152; now I'm down to 150. By February I should be 144, which I consider to be my ideal weight. The 8 extra pounds doesn't sound like much, but it always shows up in my gut. I never cut back on my daily fix of ice cream or wine, but the fact is that several years ago I cut out stuff like pop (soda), french fries, chips and in general, just reduced the size of my servings and chose my foods more carefully. I picked up a downhill ski membership for this winter; besides fun, it is another physical activity.

I used to belong to a gym, but because of my other activities during the summer, I could not justify the annual membership when I was only using it for only half the year. In the spring, I will skip the mall walk and swimming and do moderate amounts of outdoor walking, cycling and of course, touring. And the cycle will repeat from lack of exercise, I will gradually put back on the 8 pounds or so only to have to shed them again next winter. Now if I wasn't riding the Beemer, I wouldn't have to work at this during the winter months.

...it always shows up in my gut...Paul F

Yep. But I do note that a number of the real hard core work out guys (i.e. 3 hour a day guys) at our club have small paunches.

...downhill [skiing] is another physical activity...

A day of alpine skiing will give you the equivalent of a week of light workouts. It's a good combination of aerobic, and anaerobic (for your lower body) activity.

To all posting here, I was introduced to some good reading that directly relates to this topic. The book is 'In Defense of Food' by Michael Pollan. If you have genuine concerns about your health and how to maintain it well, then you might check this out.

On my way

I just saw this thread too. I was 6'2, 270# July 1. I was having trouble reaching my boot laces and felt lousy. Decided hiring a professional was a good idea and got a personal trainer and commited myself to a year. I'm down 40# now, just ran 5 miles this weekend (trainer wouldn't let me run until recently) and feel like I've lost 20 years in age. I am planning on a couple triathlons and a half marathon next year. To top it off I still enjoy the foods and beverages in moderation.
