2008 Get-in-Shape/Weight Loss thread

I'm going to get in on this as well, for years I was a regular runner, 4 marathons to my credit. I played football in HS at 6' 180, when I came home from the army I was a fit 190. The running actually got me down to 170 and I stayed there as a police officer and FBI agent. Due to injuries my running slowed way down but I kept at the weights so I also have some good muscle mass but now I have a gut and have gone from a 34 to 38 inch waist. The blood chemistry is all good so far except for some slightly elevated tri glycerides. I currently weigh in at 215 lbs and I need to be at 190. I cant' run anymore it hurts to much, but I walk and swim and continue with the weights. I have a definite roll of fat around my middle. At middle age (58) the metabolism definitely slows down so my plan is to cut back on the eating and increase the cardio. I'll check back in a week or so. Good luck everyone.
:eat, oh Sh*& :p I'm hungry already!!!

Have you tried riding a bicycle as a substitute for running? Many of those that I ride or have ridden with are former runners whose legs and knees finally gave up on them.

cookies are the bain of my existence

When I first got it together last August, I dropped weight big time, and hit 198 from a high of 225? I avoided the scale then, but nw I am back at 200, need that last 10 pounds off. and can do it with my current 1 hr. weights every other night and general summer activites biking, building somthing for somebody when I'm not riding my motor-sikel!At least, that is a plan; if I leave the damn cookies alone! agggghh!;(

To other fatties like myself in the crowd:

Lets all shoot for our declared weight drop, right here and right now. I declare you will see me at 190 in Gillette.

Scott?

Richard?

Anybody?

Anybody else want a bit of group goal thing by mid July? No matter if you do Gillette or not, just meet the goal?

Put my foot in the door here guys (and ladies)
please don't slam it shut:p

In for 175 in Gillette. :nod

Damn. Where are you right now? You're lighter than me, aren't you. :bluduh

175? -gulp-

I'll match you.

Currently at 187, down 21 pounds from 208 where I started with WW. I feel like I'm at a plateau, though. Of course, being in STL for three days and off my regular plan didn't help. :bluduh

I still can't believe you're lighter than me. :bluduh Your challenge will be what happens if you add some exercise. It'll probably get you through the plateau, but you'll put some pounds on first as you build some muscle. :D

How many chins did you lose? We need before and after photos!

OK. I'm in too. 6'-0" and floating right around 220. Based on my body comp, I'm shooting for 205-210 without any loss of hard-earned muscle mass. Us operations level firefighters gotta stay strong.

For those of you with running "issues" (I get bored fast) you might try one of those stationary rowing machines. My gym uses Concept2 machines, they'll kick your butt.

I also use a free online workout program http://www.crossfit.com/

Their politics skew right but the workouts rock, just remember to scale the weights to suit you.

Ok

I will pledge to lose 20 pounds (to put me at an even 200) by the time of the national. I already purchased an old school rowing machine. This will be strength training, the bicycle will be the aerobic.

FWIW, I was 185 in high school, but I can't imagine getting down that thin now.

Ok ok! I'm 5'6" weighing in at 218.

When I was in the service I weighed around 180 with a 30" waist. When I started climbing poles and towers, the waste line got up to 32 or so.

I did atkins for a while, got down to around 196 and then shot up past my original 212.

So, I've started walking again, did a 5 mile uphill battle the other day, plan on doing it again today.

Alright, alright. I'll give it another go.
I'm making myself more aware of the calories I'm consuming. Especially calories from fat. I'm curious what you guys think of the "salads" being vended by the likes of Wendy's, Quiznos, etc. I think they are much less nasty than say, a triple cheeseburger but I am curious as to just how "healthy" they are compared to a salad you'd make at home. After perusing the websites and looking at the nutritional info offered there I think I know the answer but give me your .02.
I'm on the road this week so I'm eating a lot of the "fast salads".

Watch out for the dressing. If you're trying to go low fat, bacon and cheese are obstacles.

I think part of the weight loss problem is the brain. It sees that you're cutting back and it panics and starts to horde.

I try to behave, really. But I can't walk past a box of donuts. I don't buy junk food, no chips, icecream, or cookies in my house. I eat real food, very few processed foods. I feel fine, just don't like streachin these size 36's.

Do I have to give up beer? Go back to straight scotch? or is all alcohol going to end up on my belly. :)

I went to the gym for 6 months every morning, gained weight, was tired and poorer. pah.

You have to eat to lose weight. You have to eat the right things in the right quantity though. Keep a food log. It is an eye opener. I have a tendency to graze when I'm bored. Now I find myself not eating things I used to because of the shame of putting them in the log. Also some things I don't eat now because they are not worth the hassle of logging them. A couple of M&Ms while walking by the candy bowl just aren't worth it. Before I wouldn't have even given them a thought as I picked up a handful and popped them in while I was going by.

One beer ..no..... 6 beers yes! BTW light beer is a marketing scam. Get yourself a good beer and enjoy what your drinking. The most liberating moment for me was finding out Guiness draught bottle has only 125 calories

I might have to join up.

Every day, I'm the fattest I've ever been.

I lived on my own throughout high school (class of 04), and maintained 140lbs. I moved in with my mom in 2005 after my music career was looking bleak, so I could attend the community college and save money. Since then, I've gained 33lbs.. of fat, not muscle.

So, as of 04-23-08, I am 5'10" 173lbs. I can guarantee that I will be significantly less-fat by the end of 2008.

(This should be a MOA ON contest with forms to mail in, like the mileage contest. Haha.)
