R1100RT Fuel Injection Issues

Hi All-

I was able to squeeze in about 100 miles on my recently purchased 2000 R1100RT before the weather had other ideas, and I fear the season is now over. The bike has extremely low miles for its year, with previous owner stating that some years he barely got any miles on it at all. As a result, it suffers from some fuel delivery issues which I suspect include fuel injectors and throttle bodies in need a good cleaning along with synchronization.

I understand that this model tends to suffer from a fuel injection system that causes the bike to surge at times. I have experienced this already, but assume it’s probably also due the bike needing service.

I have noticed the EME offers an updated injector called the EV14 BOSCH injector FINJ335. The claim is that the updated injector improves atomization, fuel consumption, and also helps eliminate engine surging.

I am curious to know if others have tried these injectors and if they have found them to be a big improvement. I would also like to know if there are other methods being used that have proven to help the throttle response and fuel delivery for the R1100RT. I really enjoy the bike so far. But I really need to address this issue.

Thank you!

A full and "proper" tune-up should always be the first step. Being anal-retentive (as I am) about this helps; a "quickie setup" won't cut it, especially with the throttle cables' balance.
"Search" (advanced) these oilhead threads for things like "valve clearance" and "throttle body" (and "bodies"), and you'll get a lot back.
The Internet BMW Riders group also has quite the collection of tune-up info, at

Several people on this Forum have had good things to say about the updated injectors, especially when they're "Matched" (as by Tills https://www.tills.de/ ), but do the maintenance first.

Everything Pauls1150 says is correct. With limited use, and your issue with fuel delivery - I would pull off the injectors and clean them. There are YouTube videos to clean them yourself. But, for very limited cost, you can ship them (or bring them locally) to a professional injector cleaning service. These guys will test the injectors, clean them, install new filters and o-rings and give you a report of the before and after flow test. I ride a VERY HIGH mileage 1100RT and run the original injectors, with essentially no surge. I've had my injectors cleaned twice over the years.
