Michelin Road 5 tires

I have Road 5 GT's on my K1300GT with 38/42 pressure. Tires have about 6K miles on them and I notice a loud humming sound from the front tire on some road surfaces. Never had this happen with Road 4 GT's.

I get the humming at about 40mph on the Road4 GT on my R1200RT. Not as bad as the Metzler Roadtec 01 though.

The Road 4GT is a great tire for 2 up. The Metzler is also, just too loud.

Dang. Guess i'm happy with my Road 4's for the time being. Got a set of Dunlop Roadsmart 3's to go on as soon as i can convince my Road 4's to wear out. 9,000 and still going.

Perhaps you know this already, but according to Dunlop the Road Smart 4's have a different center compound to give much great tread life over the 3's. There is a nice chart on this Dunlop page which shows graphically what Dunlop claims are the improvements of the 4's.

Interesting,

I ran my GS and now run my RS at 37/42. 1 over recommended to further avoid cupping per my mechanic

I've been through one set of RS4s on my '18 RT. Turn-in may be marginally better, likely due to the new profile on the front. Not a game-changer though. Rear tire wear was not impressively better either. The deepest layer of rubber just above the cords was exposed at 6000 miles. The front appears to wear a bit better, but of less significance to me, as I prefer to replace both tires at once, and give away some miles on the front. The price differential is about 100.00 compared to the RS3s, an excellent tire which has served me well over the span of 6 or 8 sets. I plan to stick with the RS3.

So far I have not seen one complaint about the RS4 about wear or grip.

Have you run the RS3 tires? If yes, how do the RS4 tires compare in terms of steering feel? I ran a set of PR3s and my impression was that grip, both dry and wet, was fine but turn-in at cornering was not as crisp as with the Michelins. Mileage was a bit less than I typically got with Michelins but the Dunlops did cushion the ride a bit better, tho. Just curious, as I’m thinking of trying the RS4 when my R5GTs are toast.

Thx,
DeVern

We've had a couple sets of RS3. Unless the price of the RS4 drops I'll probably stay with the RS3. I'm happy with the feel, mileage and cost of the RS3.
Last year we paid $229 pus tax for each set of RS3. $169 after a $60 rebate.
October I put new RS3 back tires before trading the bikes in and paid $128 for each tire.

Most people seem to like the 4 better than the 3 but when I buy two sets I don't want to pay $200 more.

The RS4's I put on my K1200RS at Great Falls were the first Dunlop tires I had run for decades, so have no experience with the RS3'. However, I read some "professional" reviews on-line, and then talked with at least four riders at the rally who had run the 3's and then the 4's who said the big difference was the much greater tire life with the 4's, which is also Dunlop's claim. I believe that road surfacing can make a major difference in mileage. I usually get very good mileage on the might K12 riding it in the "S" tradition of "RS". :brow. However, I know others with the same bike, using the same tires, and who ride very much like I do who get both more and less tire life.

I'm less concerned what others riders get no matter how they ride. My only concern is my own results riding the way I do. And with 4400 miles and only 2/32nds wear on the tread, the PR5's and 4's would have been good for another 2K miles max, while the RS4's have another 6K left on them. Riding the K, then the GS, now the RS, I ride the same way with all of them.

PR4's and 5's were planted on tar, and excellent in the rain, but so are the RS4's, every bit as much so. And nearly twice the longevity at that.

Chicken strips on the K were 3/8", the GS the same. With the RS they measure 5/16's, so I lean all the above bikes the same for the most part,

I put 5000 miles on road 5s on my Guzzi Norge and estimate they were at 50% life. The Norge is known to burn through rear tires like a 5 year old eating a bag of candy. I ran 38F 42R. There has to be another reason yours did that in such a low mileage, it is not something we hear about with these tires.
