Heated Vest or Heated Jacket Liner

I’ve been in below freezing temperatures with just a heated vest and heated gloves. Keeping the core warm typically handles the arms.

My beef is that for it to work, the heating layer needs to be next to the base layer and snug. So, pick your protective gear accordingly.
 
With all the discussion on vest/jackets, can we get a few recommendations for heated jackets? I understand they have their own controller, and am wondering if any of them will plug into a hot sae.

SAE pigtails are very common at your local FLAPS or trailer supplier, so if you need to convert anything, they make it pretty easy.
Pretty sure that FLAPS is Friendly Local Auto Parts Store. That said, a Battery Tender comes with an SAE pigtail and a number of motorcycle shops here locally usually have a container of them next to the cashier area.

I've got plenty of sae cabling. I'm just wondering if I can use that [ or perhaps need an adapter ] that's already directly connected to the battery that plugs into the warm and safe.

If that's the case, I just need to run a splitter on the sae at battery and run one cable to the side of the bike where the liner would plug into.

There are lots of adapters available. Warm and Safe may even have what you need.
On my F800GS and ATV, I ran an SAE and the coaxial (Gerbing) leads directly to the battery.
I don’t mind haven’t 2 leads on the bike.

Yes on the FLAPS. (does not refer to what a pilot controls...)
Now we need to use battery maintainers.
Just fer grins - My RT has the black knee pads on the sides of the tank... I stuck one side of a super-Velco piece to that, and the other side to the back of my controller... works great! And I can plug into one of the accessory outlets (fused of course) below the seat. When not in use, the controller & wiring go nicely into the jacket's pocket.
 
Called warm and safe and spoke to Mike. He worked through why I shouldn't use an adapter to sae but their own connection to the battery. I'll be ordering the waterproof liner and controller this fall. I don't need it at the moment and the jacket and controller aren't inexpensive

I told Mike about members on this forum recommending their product, he was pleased to hear it and thanked me for letting him know

Another question members may be able to help me with.

If I'm running Denali d2's, garmin nav 5 and my phone. Is the warm and safe going to overload the battery's capacity in wattage use? Mike mentioned if the output is 400w [ I believe that's correct on my 16RS ] how much does the bike itself draw and the accessories need to be determined.

I'm no electrical person by any means, even at times finding it difficult to understand terminology.

We use the coaxial end pigtail that came with our Warm & Safe jackets. For the tire pump and battery charger I have coaxial to SAE adapters.
BTW heated gear pigtails use a heavier wire than battery chargers do.

I can't answer the question about if it will overload your bike's circuits, since I don't know the exact particulars of your bike, but:
An adapter, if "poorly" constructed, can add some resistance to the line, impeding the vest's (etc.) capability. It may also create a warm spot right there.
On the other hand, if it's made properly (heavy duty, "enduro"), that won't happen (even though it will still have "a little more" resistance).
Direct Connection is usually "Best".
Note that the coaxial center contact (and the total contact area) on most heated gear is a Bunch smaller than the SAE contacts... more and bigger metal is a Good Thing to my mind...

Mike at warm and safe basically warned of the same thing. His question of the 400 watts being pushed out how much the bike is using. His guess was something around 250 watts leaving 150 watts for accessories. His units use 90-120 watts. The Denalis use 10 watts each which takes available watts down to either 110 watts or 140 watts being used. The nav 5's [ all navs likely ] don't list any wattage use ].

I don't want to tax the bikes ability to handle the above equipment. BTW, motor is a 16 RS

I ask only because people have expressed using the heated seats and grips with other accessories running and it'll drain the system unless traveling at higher rpm's than around town.

What I have gleaned about these charging systems is that any excess charging is shunted to ground if not used. That’s why the voltage regulators are “finned” for cooling the essential “dead-short” when the excess charging voltage goes unused.
In other words, I believe your bike will handle all your indicated “load(s)”.

On our RSs we could run the Warm & Safe 90 watt heated jacket liner,, heated grips, Nav V, and Clearwater lights without and problems.
