Frame damage...

A frame is a pretty in-expensive part to buy. Low demand for those.
The frame is from a 77 R100RS and is unique in that regard. A good replacement frame with paper is a couple hundred but destroys the authenticity which happens now and then...I can get a 77 factory fresh frame NOS that has no numbers. Don't want to give up without looking at all options.
 
I would talk to a good frame guy first. Even if the cost was the same as a good used or new replacement it might be worth repairing to keep the originality.
 
Frame checks out...good news.

I took the frame to someone with considerable experience with frames for BMW's and one who has also seen a lot of bent frames having been a dealer for many years previously. He checked it over visually then put it in the frame fixture. He did not see any problems with the 'wrinkle'. The backbone is straight side to side with a very shallow bow right across the wrinkle. There is no apparent change in steering head angle and there is no side to side deflection of the steering head either. No dents or bent frame tubes. No cracked or flaking paint. No rust. Just that little wrinkle. The steering head gussets are flat and front down tubes are straight where they are supposed to be so its off for minor repairs to the passenger foot peg and muffler mount due to the small tabs being cracked - and then to the powder painter.

I'll close this thread with a photo of a broken BMW airhead frame - This happened in 2007 and has been repaired with satisfactory results. The break was just 3 inches back from where the wrinkle is on my frame hence the reason for my concern originally. I guess a little wrinkle is no big deal after all.

With all of the people trying to give Airhead frames away, I wouldn't ride a damaged frame for anything in the world, no matter who said that it was OK.

In fact, I'd re-stamp a used frame first! :D
 
Nope - a hot glue gun.

A very hot glue gun I'd say.

Not a perfect "stack of dimes, but it certainly looks like someone knows what they're doing; comparable material thickness, "oval" mending plate gives nice transition from longitudinal to radial with minimal radial weld; stronger than OEM.

Crikey, these bikes only weighs what, 430 pounds?
