Damage To R1200 RT IN Tip Over

I had a slow tip over in a parking lot with my RT. No damage to speak of, some minor scratches was all. Minor meaning I can live with it, it's a motorcycle, doesn't have to be perfect. I was actually quite surprised at how little damage was done.

Could have been lots worse.

Hi All -

New to the forum, funny I ran across this post first.

My '06 RT had the unfortunate experience of a drop yesteday. Front tire hit a deep patch of gravel as I was pulling to a stop and the bike was over before I could even try to stop it.

Result was some scratches and deep gouges in the right side case, and the right cylinder head guard was badly dinged up and sligtly bent inward, I have the Touratech guards. The clearance between the guard and cylider is less than the right side. No other damage to me or the bike, but I am pretty bummed about the paint damage.

Cheers!

Just the other day, on a Saturday ride with our local club, up in the mountains near Nederland, CO at the junction of highway 119 and 46 we stopped off the road in a dirt clearing (as usual) to let some of the stragglers catch up. We then noticed that a serious gale was whipping south to north. It must have been close to 70mph. It was all we could do to keep our bikes from falling over.

We decided to get moving to get out of the wind. I took off and just started moving. The wind literally pushed my bike over while I was taking off. I rolled off and the bike fell in the dirt on the right side. I have the Wunderlich engine guard and kuryakyn highway pegs. No damage to the cylinder head, but did get some scratches on the right side bag on the bottom. Kind of looks like dirt in a way. I am sure that if it would have been a harder ground area, it would have been worse.

Three of us had our bikes pushed over. One of the three on an R1200R had it pushed over twice. His damage was worse. I tried to rub it out with some polishing compound. Didn't work. I guess I need something stronger.

What do you think would be the next thing to try?

no definite solution for your scratches, but i can attest to the windy conditions. our local BMW club (Ft. Collins, Twisted Shaft MC) took a run up over Stove Prairie and then up to Cameron Pass on 14 Sat afternoon as well. yeah, mega windy, but ours was shooting straight down the canyon, west to east.
my bike didn't fallover, it just stripped it's input splines instead (doubt it was wind related), leaving me stranded on the side of the road, waiting for g/f with bike trailer to effect an extraction. i set it up so that kickstand was on the east side, and sat down with my back to the bike to wait. sometimes it felt like the wind was going to push the bike right over the top of me!

Had a 0mph clutch side drop - wish the bike had a side stand down light - digression.

Had the plastic BMW valve cover gaurds - no damage to valve cover, scratches on guard.

Scrathes on mirror corner because it popped off just like in the video

Had scratches on the left pannier.

Took to bodyshop which color matched BMW Biaritz Blue - $200 can't tell the difference between the two

Black Cases on R1200R

Has anyone repainted the lids on the black cases on an R1200R? I thought the black color was molded in - until I tried to clean off a smudge of moly paste with some acetone and the rag turned black:cry Any suggestions on how to match the texture of the original paint?

Deja vu!

Two drops on the brake side (Don't Ask!) resulted in identical damages.

Local GMC bodyshop color-matched and painted the sidecase for less than $100.

THose guards won't keep you from scratching up the top edge of the sidebags as I've done. If there's a will, there's a way. If the bike goes all the way over (as mine has done twice now) those guards are worthless.

I'm not complaining, my bike has character.

No valve cover guide will protect the cases as it is how the bike drops.

The important thing is only the ego was hurt :thumb

Mirror

Question - do the mirrors pop off on the 2010 RT? Some say yes, others say no.

I think the words "pop off" are a little misleading but yes, most definitely - the mirrors on all the RTs are removable. They're held in place with a ball-head locking pin [see #7] that is inserted into a rubber grommet [see #4].

2010RT - sidewalk tipover - sidestand was heard to "clunk" but in up position, not down. Over she went. Bottom of left side case slightly scratched. Polar Ice Blue, so I won't even bother touching up, it can hardly be seen. Metal valve cover protecter slightly scratched. 'Won't bother with that, either, you have to crawl up under the bike to even see it, besides, that's what they are there for, and it will fall over again. Mirror never touched the ground.

On the 2010-2011 RTs they do not pop off. You have to first remove the mirror glass through an access hole in the bottom of the housing. You will now have access to several screws that secure the housing to the fairing frame. I think this is detailed in your owner manual.
