1971 R75/5 weird clutch problem

We are talking about doing the /5 pictured above?
Yes! Thanks a lot. I will print your message out and use it as a guide when I start the job. I have some /5 service manuals here that might help too.

BTW, the fork springs are quite old. Is there a way for them to be tested? I used to have a Avon Frame mounted fairing on the bike and had stronger springs put in then, but that was back in the late 1970's. How long do they usually last?

BTW, I have never even greased the steering head bearing and it's still the original. But I don't see any obvious problems with it. Are there any special tests for it or other stuff while I am working on the bike in that area?

EDIT:

I just did a search and it looks like this might be a good place to get my fork parts. Such as 07 31 R kit 005 and the fork boots and springs, etc.

Glad you are making forward progress..........for me, I typically go to:

http://www.benchmarkworks.com/

for parts, ADVICE, and encouragement........Good guys, fair prices, and dont mind spending time trying to help out.

Don't know how long you had the Avon on; but for sure could have given those springs a permanent "sag". I remember on my ol 72 with the Avon on it surely felt a LOT lighter when I finally took it off..........Perhaps a NEW thread about this subject?????..........God bless.......Dennis

Well, I am going to replace the springs regardless. They are cheap enough to replace.

I will soon order:

1 ea. $74.00: 07 31 R kit 005

2 ea. $23.50: 31 42 1 234 908 boot- 11 ribs or: (see the fork boot post)

2 ea. $30.00: 31 42 2 002 115 boot- 13 ribs

4 ea. $1.50: 13 72 1 261 026 clamp

1 pr. $88.00: 31 99 0 000 001 spring

total= $228.00

BTW, I started a new thread on forks. Please see the "Fork boots" thread in this section.

The Avon faring was on for around 20 years.

Now back to my clutch. I have never done a clutch job in anything before, so my 1971 BMW R75/5 is my first. Now that I am retired, I am finding the time to do these jobs.

Anyway, I just now removed the clutch. Getting the tranny out and such went fairly smooth, no major problems. I did leave the back wheel on, and never even needed that wooden block the manuals mention. I am not clear on what the wooden block should do anyway, as even after the swing arm is pulled back, everything stays nice and stable on level ground while the rear wheel is still on.

But I don't see the spacers shown here as item number 4. I can only recall having the clutch done once since 1971, which was done at a BMW cycle shop. Can anybody here tell me anything about those spacers and why I don't see them in my bike?

Getting the clutch out was a fairly easy job. I expected more trouble than it was. I just hope I have the same luck when I start putting it all back together after I get my new clutch parts. Should I replace all four major parts? And what about those spacers? It looks like the four parts will cost around $450.00 or so. But do items such as the compression ring wear down? Should it be replaced? The other three items I have no doubt should be replaced. But it doesn't look like the compression ring has much on it to wear. But since this is my very first clutch job on anything, I figure I should ask, as I don't really know what I should be looking for.

So what can anybody here tell me about the compression ring and those spacers? And where is a good place to order this stuff?

Duane has a page on clutches:

http://w6rec.com/duane/bmw/clutch/

The spacers were likely for /2 clutch packs to provide room for the dirt/dust to escape. Unless you have a hold over clutch from the /2 era, you probably have a newer compression ring which doesn't need the spacers.
