2014 800 gs trans problem. BOY! heres an odd one

MY son has a 2014 F 800 gs. He's been complaining about downshifting from 3 to 2. I took it for a spin today. Yep, wont come back down. You have to really play with it. Really I feel That its all the gears. Any Ideas?

Make sure that the lever is tight on the transmission shift shaft. Looseness here limits the throw and makes downshifting problems.

Not That I can tell. IT really CLUNKS when you put into gear. I MEAN REALLY CLUNKS. Nothing smooth at all. It shifts fine going up..... well I say fine.It clunks its way up but it does go up the gears. The coming back down is near impossible. As a matter of fact I had to come up the driveway in 4th. I couldn't get it to downshift at all. I'm an old airhead/Oilhead guy. These new bikes are all Greek to me. No offense to the Greeks. I just don't understand bikes very well yet..

You can also check the clutch cable for proper adjustment making sure for smooth complete movement.

I believe he may have done some real damage in the gear box. Shift lever is fine. Clutch cable play is good. At idle just putting into gear it bangs in there. I know it will bump a little but this thing Bangs into gear and jumps. Do the new gear box's have forks that move the gears like the old one's have? My oldest son is on his way over. He has a 2016 800 gs that's in perfect running condition. I'll compare the two and see the difference if any. I can't believe the trans should be that harsh when shifting.

Try it with the engine shut off but with the bike moving- down hill or with someone pushing the bike.

Compare the clutch action on the two bikes and verify that the clutch is releasing properly.

Best,
DeVern
