2008 Get-in-Shape/Weight Loss thread

I might have to join up.

Every day, I'm the fattest I've ever been.

I lived on my own throughout high school (class of 04), and maintained 140lbs. I moved in with my mom in 2005 after my music career was looking bleak, so I could attend the community college and save money. Since then, I've gained 33lbs.. of fat, not muscle.

So, as of 04-23-08, I am 5'10" 173lbs. I can guarantee that I will be significantly less-fat by the end of 2008.

(This should be a MOA ON contest with forms to mail in, like the mileage contest. Haha.)

Dude, you may in fact be a bit pudgy, but at 22 you're probably not even done growing.

Under Weight Watchers, I get about 25 points a day. An ounce of cheese is a point. I don't like cheese enough to add it to anything, though I'll have a little brie on a cracker if I'm at a party and it's out.

Here's the thing - a portion of protein (beef, pork or chicken) is about 4 ounces. That's a quarter pound. When was the last time you had an actual serving that size at dinner? Fish? You can eat about 6 ounces of that for the same points value as (oink, moo or cluck).

If you approach your daily food not as a diet, but as a budget, you'll make choices that are better.

I'm using WW, but a bunch of folks I know are using www.dailyplate.com to track their intake. It's been quite eye opening for them. I know when I started to track my food intake it made all the difference.
 
Yup, it's a process. I like cheese, so that's a problem I'll have to overcome. I think for me it's about being aware of what and how much I eat as well as counting calories. For now what I'm trying to do is shift the focus away from meat and carbs and more to fruit and veg.

No kidding. I was 5' 11" and weighed about 130 when I was that age.

Have you tried riding a bicycle as a substitute for running? Many of those that I ride or have ridden with are former runners whose legs and knees finally gave up on them.

I've done some spinning classes and airdyne. I don't get out on the road much around here. no shoulders and the drivers don't look out for you. Swimming and walking is okay on my knees. My main problem is to motivate myself to get out and walk. For years it was up at 5 am. in to the Gym and in the office by 8:30. I need to get back into that discipline. I recently moved from our Pittsburgh office to a Satellite office in Johnstown Pa. so I'm needing a new gym. I'm thinking of trying IUP where my wife teaches as I have spouse privileges. Keep at it guys and gals.
 
beer is truly my real enemy. if i don't cut it down significantly, i don't see any improvements coming. unfortunately, i'm not a 2 or 3 beers every night kind of guy. i'm a no beer 3-4 nights a week kinda guy then a 4-8 beer 2-3 times a week person. 8 beers - 1600 calories, at best, and that is certainly no good. i guess i've been able to stay relatively svelte by eating no breakfast and generally small lunches. 6'5" and 204 may sound "great" to a lot of you, but like knary said, i feel like i'm full of crap.

although i did get over 20 miles of bike riding in today (with a 1 hour nap in prospect park, hahahah).
 
Older means your body's needs change

I'm not a huge eater. But I found out that as I age, my body's ability to metabolize the food changed. When I start putting on weight (most people too) is when I kept eating at the same pace (or drink the same beer, Bubba!), my body quit burning all that I was eating. The other factor for me is more hours setting behind the desk than when I was younger.

Nowadays I #1. Exercise more #2 Eat less, and eat things better for me (or at least try) #3during the day, make a conscious effort to move my body..not exercise per say, but I get out behind the desk and walk, BREATHE DEEP and stretch.

All these help maintain my weight and health as I age.

Start eating breakfast and I bet you notice a change. The reason they say it is the most important meal of the day is because it is the ignition for your metabolism.

shape up / weight less

I swim three days a week on alternate days, 30 lengths for 750 metres. On the other 2 days I do weights for 1/2 hour: about 20 routines. I go at noon and it's a nice break to my day. Squash once a week (the best work out of all, but it's hard on the body) and some skiing and hiking in season.

I've been doing this for years, and my goal is to stay under 190 pounds (I'm 6' 1"). Being skinny in my youth, is now helping me as I get older.

I'm real careful what, and how much, I eat.

And substitute rye for beer, when I can. :D

I typically get up @ 6:30 a.m. and eat a Balance or Clif bar and head out the door @ 7:00. By the time I've walked the few blocks to the gym, I'm pretty wide-awake and rarin' to go. I do know that if I lived further from the gym and had to take a bus or subway, I'd probably sleep a little later and go after work. :p

The best thing for motivation, IMHO, is getting involved with a group of people that work out together. Make a pact with some friends. Peer pressure helps.

almost never, i've tried, but as some people need a coffee to start the day, i have to shower. i'm not gonna do that, then run, the shower again, as i'm not an early riser. lately i've been incorporating my exercise into my day, bike riding from point to point in the city, playing soccer, etc. i like exercise more if i don't have to think of it as such.
 
OK here's my ramble on the subject.

I was always tall and thin. Leaving high school I was 6'4" and 165, and wore a 32" waist. Four years of the army put on some bulk, all in a good way- that final growth that filled out my frame (the physical fitness aspects of military service were NOT what they were cracked up to be).
A few years later in college my brother commented that I had developed what called a 'Bill Clinton gut.' In the intervening years I have fluctuated a bit, but rended upward. In 2002 I got a job that demanded constant travel, mostly in cars. I could work very hard and be home before Friday- which meant odd hours, lots of road-food, and then lots of loafing once I got home. Not good. By this time the 36" waist I was wearing in college was getting a little tight.
Now I'm about to turn 40 and I'm trying hard to stay in a 38". I have no regular access to scales so I can only guess what I weight, but honestly I don't care about my weight- I care about how my clothing fits! I would like to get back at least to the 36, maybe beyond. I don't have a massive challenge, but I have genetics against me, and I also have never been terribly athletic.
Exercise is very appealing but still takes lots of motivation. I do like to get outdoors and just MOVE, do something positive and good for me, in whatever form it takes. I often find myself in what is mostly walking with bursts of running as I'm able. Shin pain is a recurring problem though and I'm reading up on that- will have try some good shoes as suggested in another thread (I've been horribly broke lately though, so the shoes may have to wait). If that doesn't help, I'll have to save my pennies for a bicycle. I am also about to move in a few days to a new neighbourhood where I'll be within walking distance of a YMCA- might have to join up.
Exercise not only keeps me trim, but I like being able to run should the real need arise. In my recent walk-jogs I've felt like I have a house chained to me. I miss being light and energetic. And I know I'll be better in the touring-saddle, as well as in my travel adventures. My recent trip to Japan was a real eye-opener because I walked hard and fast for more miles than I could guess every day, and ate fairly light too. Chopsticks are good for eating in a slower and more deliberate manner. I felt healthier in Japan than I'd felt in ages. Must apply those lessons.

So that's my story, and in a few minutes I'll be headed outdoors for another walk-jog.

Yeah, I'm retired. I do my walks now to match the weather. This time of year I try to make it before noon so it won't be so hot.

Today's ride of 409 miles on the bike is not like a walk. I'll have to get back on it when I get home from Branson.

Mandy, for years now I have been up at 5 a.m. comute into Pittsburgh, in the Gym by 6:30 and at work by 8:15. I pack my clothes the night before and drive in in my sweats. The gym had everything, shower's sauna, steam room. It even provided a locker and a clean set of work out clothes every day. It didn't come cheap but it was in the same complex where my office is so it was worth it. In the spring summer and fall I would go out and run MWF and lift weights on Tue, Thurs. I quit running about 3 years ago due to knee problems and started using the rowing machines, airdyne, spinning, walking on a treadmill etc. Recently my discipline went out the window and I started slacking off, but am getting back into it with a change in where I work. It took a while to get in the habit of early rising as I'm not a natural early riser. I started when I was in my 20's because I wanted to run a marathon and had to get the mileage in. The way I did it was setting my alarm 5 minutes earlier each day until I got to 5 a.m. Now I automatically wake up around 4:45 a.m. Even on weekends!
Down 1.5 pounds since I started on this thread. It helps that my wife is doing the same thing so we support each other.
 
I am purchasing a bike of the peddle variety for fun and exercise. Any suggestions on what to look for Knary?
