Do I need to change the thread title? ;) It does reference both elements!

I would have an oil test done at someone like Blackstone Labs. They can tell you what metals are in the oil in what quanites. They will I've you a summery of what is wearing etc.
 
This will lead to a black market in oils.
People mixing their own formulations in bathtubs and smuggling.

Your BMW dealer has three BMW-branded motor oils for sale

5W-40 full synthetic for wet clutch bikes

15W-50 semi-synthetic for Oilheads, Hexheads, and Camheads

20W-50 Dino for Airheads

Clearly they will meet BMW requirements.

I haven't seen Dino oil at my dealer in years. Which is why I began to shop around for a more suitable oil.
 
That oil description plainly says that it is NOT for bikes with a catalytic converter. That would be our Oilheads. I don't know why they say that, but it's there.

The logical reason for them saying that would be an increased ZDDP content, but since no ZDDP figures are available for that oil we donā€™t know thatā€™s the case. At $13/qt Iā€™d like to know what Iā€™m buying.

Too much zinc, or especially phosphorus, may clog the little holes in the cat.
Besides reducing the exhaust flow, this will also cause increased internal heating.

I got a solution: Install a Dominator muffler and say goodbye to the cat and about 25 pounds of boat anchor muffler/cat and all will be well. Oh, and with less back pressure your bike will even run better. Might not work so well where vehicle inspections are required for registration, don't know.

Of course this is NOT the oil BMW recommends for Oilheads, so your concern is irrelevant.
