Yuasa Battery Charger with CAN Bus?

TrailingJack

not really Jack
So I finally brought my new to me 2005 K1200S home from the dealership where it waited for me till the weather broke around here.

I use a Yuasa Hotshot battery tender on my 1996 GS where I just plug it in and plug the lead directly into the power port on the bike.

I bought this same tender for my K bike after I thought I read that it would work in the power port with the CAN Bus set up if I turned the key on to power up the port first.

I told the dealer this and he told me it wouldn't work and that I would have to hard wire a lead to the battery.

I'm not against doing that, but would rather just plug it in instead.
Anyone have any advice?

You can wire the old power socket with a fused lead to the battery directly. We just ran a SAE two prong pigtail fused to battery and have adapters on chargers to connect SAE...also use that pigtail to power other items in the tankbag

You can try the '05 handshake as well. Turn on key, plug charger into socket and plug in charger. turn key off and see if the charger stays on. Our S's work that way with the BMW charger. My 05RT was the same.
Not familiar with display option on the Yuasa, the BMW has indicator lights.

Yep, that "handshake" is what I thought I read about.
We'll see if it works.
Am I risking damaging anything electrical if I try that?

Thanks!

So a guy over at I-BMW (the K bike forum) said that the "handshake' method would work until its charged and then once it goes to the float mode, the system will shut it down.
The float indicator light is lit on the charger now.
Seems to be just like how it works on my old GS.
Any thoughts?

Not sure about the float mode shutdown, I move the charger between bikes in rotation so not sure.

Nothing magical about the CANBUS , you will not hurt anything
