Once the snow melts, or maybe much sooner, will pu my new (2007) R1200R at MAX. My 1150R had this very handy helmet lock but it appears that the 1200 does not.

Any farkles to look at here? Any slick ways of storing the helmet on the bike while at work or at the grocery store?

There is a forum right here for the R1200R hexhead. It says bags come standard on your bike ergo there's your helmet lock. l suggest you take your helmet with you otherwise you will be replacing it. We do not live in a polite society anymore.

here's the forum link: http://forums.bmwmoa.org/archive/index.php/t-42745.html

I installed a Helmet Secure lock on the right side frame. It moves easily enough that I push it out of the way when I'm not using it.

My question was just a year too late. I need to search the archives better.

But - I like the idea of the Helmet secure - in terms of bags, don't have a top case and (can't test as I have not picked up the bike yet) know that the side cases were not big enough on my 1150R.

Many thanks - as always - for the good advice !

The 1200 saddlebags are a bit bigger inside than the older ones.

I've had one of these mounted behind every license plate of every motorcycle I've owned since about 2001.

Work great - secures two helmets, and if raining, just slip your waterproof helmet bag over your lid first - then attach.

Good Luck! :german

Congrats on the new bike... you're gonna love it!

The bags on the R12R will fit the largest size Schuberth C2 that they made, no sweat. I doubt if there are many helmets larger (or heavier) then that. The other bag will just fit my bunched up Roadcrafter (with some squeezing).. making it a bike I can leave my gear in and walk away from if I'm not touring with full bags. If I am touring, and I'm going to be out of sight of the bike, I just wear the stitch and carry the helmet.

You might check out: http://r1150r.org/board/viewforum.php?f=20 - there is a quite excellent R1200R specific forum. AND you'll find that we are all avid farkler's on that forum, so what works and what doesn't has been discussed since the bike was first released!

BTW - what's your name and where are you from? We're pretty friendly here.

BTW-II - I added the year/model of your bike to the thread title. That helps draw people in who might have some useful info for you, and also helps people in the future who might be searching for the same info. Please consider doing this yourself.

2007 RT has a hook under the seat and not sure if the R does. Not very secure, but will do in a pinch.
Personally I always bring a coiled cable lock and put it through my full face helmet and it sits well right on the seat or rear view mirror. Also gives me the option of putting it through one sleeve of my riding jacket and locking both to the bike. Cable lock fits well under the seat. Enjoy your new toy.

I just hang the helmet on my highway pegs. I generally park where I can keep an eye on the bike. I'd hate to have to shoot someone over an old helmet. When going out of sight of the bike or for extended periods I just carry the helmet with me.

My 2005 RT came with a small steel cable in the standard, included "tool kit" ** to feed through the helmet and attach to the hook. The rear seat is then locked back down to secure the cable. I've used this on a couple of occasions to secure my helmet while away and it was still there on my return. (I couldn't place my helmet in the cases as they were already packed with gear for my trip.)

** (The standard, included tool kit for 2005 RT consists of a roll up pouch containing the tool to remove the oil resevoir cap and a small steel cable for securing you helmet to the under seat hook.) :laugh

Guys, unlike the RT, the R does does not come with a hook, cable, or any other storage device, hence the original question.

Motorcycle Consumer News just reviewed 10 helmet cable locks in their March '11 issue. The one-piece lock and cable types.
Their "best buy" was OnGuard 5061 Combination Cable.
Recomenmended was Kryptonite R4 REtractor Combo and Vault Serpent Cover Lock 714.

I use a Master key lock and a cable.

Guess I am a trusting soul, my helmet hangs on the passenger peg, and my tank bag is unlocked and usually contains over $1000 worth of GPS, Spot, Cameras, and misc other stuff. Sometimes I lay my $250 gloves on top of the tank bag, and leave the GPS on the mount, so I drape my $250 coat over the bag, gloves and GPS to "hide" it.

That said, I would not do this in an urban setting, I stick to rural areas, and small towns, and try to park where can see the bike, or at least where someone eying my stuff, might think I can see the bike.

I do carry a $15 cable ski lock, and on occasion will loop it through my stuff, but a leatherman would probably cut the cable if someone really wanted the stuff.

I live in a small town but 3 or 4 times a year I see a report of a stolen helmet show up on the police blotter in the newspaper. And those are $100 HJCs, not a $550 Arai.

I have this one on my GS I feel it is more for my convenience then actual security. If someone really wants your helmet they will get it.

True.

A cable cutter or knife can render any helmet security inept.

But thieves live by a smiple code: fast and easy.

Mess with that, and you stand a good chance of keeping your possessions.

Trust me.
