What To Do With My Helmet?

TNOutback

New member
I'm new again to riding. I have an 02 RR with the system cases. I also have a Nolan N103 helmet. The helmet won't fit into either case, and there is no "D" ring on the cinch strap to hook it onto the bike's helmet lock.

Where or how do I secure my helmet when I'm away from my bike? I don't want to lug it around with me. Any ideas?

You can buy a license plate holder with helmet locks on it. Not real expensive I saw one at the Cass rally this weekend in WV don't have anymore details but it looked good and worked.

I always have a bungee net strung across my rear seat, attached to the bungee buddies on my side cases. I slide my helmet under that. If I feel the need to lock it down, I use a short thin cable lock (at Aerostich or any bike store) and loop it thru the chin bar, locking the loop into the helmet lock.

I picked up a short plastic coated bicycle lock cable and I run that thru the chinbar of my Nolan and lock it to the grab bar. The the helmet can either hang off the side of the bike or sit on the seat, but either way it's not going anywhere. The cable just sits in the right fairing pocket when it's not in use.

The only helmets I ever lost were hooked into the factory helmet locks of my R100RT (the ones under the seat) by the D-Ring and someone cut the chin straps. I was at the BMW Ralley in Lake Placid so I had to buy two brand new helmets to get home. Since I've been using this method, I've never lost a helmet.

+1 on that, only I use a longer cable, and can run it through the sleeves of my riding jacket as well. Everything is secured to the bike, the helmet is covered by the coat, and the coat is covered by dead bugs, all of which reduces its appeal to others.

The lock I use was designed for laptop computers and has a retractable steel cable long enough to go through the chinbar on my Nolan and the sleeve of my jacket. The bonus is that it has a motion alarm. Targus, I think. I bought it at a convention for computer teachers. Picture me, a little old lady conservatively dressed since I was presenting one of the sessions, picking it up at the display table and remarking that this was perfect for my motorcycle helmet. Sure shook up the salesman's stereotype profiling. Friends kept coming up to me for the rest of the convention and commenting that the guy kept telling everyone about it and they knew instantly that it was me.

You can buy helmet locks that bolt to various places on a bike but the cable lock is the way to go. The built in locks on bikes, if yopu have one, are often less than usefull. The under seat lock on my GSA is just a pain in the behind to use and the one on my wifes cruser allows the helmet to hit the hot pipe. Cable locks are fairly cheap and are generally good. Besides that they allow you to lock the helmet through the chinbar. As already posted, locking the helmet with the "D" ring does little to deter theft, replacement straps can be bought. Cable lock also lets you put the helmet where you want it and like already posted can be used for other riding gear.

Pacsafe has a helmet bag, which has a wire mesh in bedded in the bag for security, and a cable to lock it on the bike. This way your helmet, gloves and whatever are secure, out of sight, and in a scratch resistant bag. http://www.pac-safe.com/www/index.php?_room=3&_action=detail&id=27

Here's a YouTube demonstration video

I have Nolans and use this when the bike's all packed up --- they're $20.00 off at Cycle Gear --- but I'd still check around for prices -- I think I've seen them as low as $29.00.

Helmet Lock

Try your local PD. They give away cable locks for locking up guns, they work well on helmets.

Here is an low cost alternative to lock any helmet with or without D rings. These can be bought and may be advertised in the BMWMOA mag????

I took a piece of aluminum and cut it in the shape of a T narrow enough to fit the locking clasp on my Nolan 102. I made a short plastic covered cable and bought a small padlock to lock it to the bike. I have locked 2 d ring helmets with the T.

I free handed the cuts, the store bought ones are prettier but I have $0.00 in mine.

I've found that my large N103 WILL fit in the right side case if I don't latch the chin bar. Just slide it in there just right and close the lid.
My N102 will fit this way also.

I would have never thought of that! Thanks.

And thanks to everyone's suggestions. I went to the local REI store and bought a 6 ft. 3/16" steel bike cable. Runs through the chin bar, through my jacket and attaches to the helmet lock. Perfect. :dance

Lock it to the top of your right side system case..... Just unlock the case, lift the handle slightly, slip your red buckle under the handle and then lock the handle back down onto the strap. Your helmet will rest on top of your case. If it rains the inside of the helmet will still stay dry. Try it, you'll like it.

This only works for Nolans... It won't work for D-Ring helmets.
