What are you listening to today?

Probably, but Willie is still writing songs even if Johnny and Merle and Chris have passed away. And Townes Van Zant was clearly 20th century.
I think it's safe to say that plenty of amazing music has been written, performed, recorded and appreciated since 2000, but none of it seems to make it here. :dunno

Earlier today I was in the car listening to SiriusXM channel 073 "60s Gold". And I got to thinking... in about 60 years or so the kids today will be on their flying scooters (think Star Wars) perhaps listening to "20s Gold"... :)

I have gotten to where I really, really dislike commercials in programs. I reckon that I am outside the target demographic. One of the commercial free streaming services that I like is Acorn.TV. This service features mostly British, Australian, and New Zealand based shows. One, in particular, that I like is called the "Brokenwood Mysteries". The head detective drives an older car with a cassette tape deck on which he listens to New Zealand (and Ozzie) country music. Tami Neilson, Mel Parsons, and Delaney Davidson are but a few of the featured artists from whom I have purchased music [all from this century, but some covers are older]. I believe that the link below is actually for a playlist of some of the featured music...

I like to listen to ABC - Melbourne to get a somewhat different perspective on things. One of the artists that I heard was Caiti Baker from the northern part of Australia. I think that she is pretty good ....

I suspect this is due to the significant concentration of geezers. That said, I personally have an excuse. I used to listen to music on the radio virtually every minute I was in a car. But here where we live in SW Texas the only radio station we can hear is Marfa Public Radio which does more Mexicano music or Classical concertos than anything else. So I don't absorb music like I used to.

I get that. I rarely listen to terrestrial radio anymore and have never had satellite. I rode from SF to DFW a few years back and streamed Spotify the entire way successfully. Between that (Apple Music these days) and what I've got on my phone, I rarely lack for music while riding.

It's interesting, but I can't stand listening to oldies. I've heard them all a bajillion times and while yeah, I do dig a yacht rock playlist, I mostly seek out new music from emerging artists.

I feel fortunate that my musical curiosity around forms, styles and artists has stayed active. I was the guy listening to disco, then punk rock, then hip hop, then new wave, then ska inside of a ten year period from 1975 to 1985. :ha

Most people my age hate my musical tastes and I'm OK with that. :D

Yacht Rock Revue

This tribute group showed up on the year end PBS Pledge Drive. If you enjoy easy listening music and songs where there isn’t a fight to understand the lyrics, you may enjoy this group.

Here is Yacht Rock Revue doing justice to Gerry Rafferty’s Baker Street. (Fan video)

Watch for the whole concert, with better sound quality, on your local PBS stations.

Highly polished and produced music, right?

I like the Apple Music playlist, but if you have Netflix, watch the documentary about it. There were a ton of working studio artists that went from place to place cranking out pop music. For a lot of us, this was the music of our college and early adult life.

Not sure if this will make it over for folks, but I dig the Apple playlist:

I hate to say it, but at this point in my life, I've probably heard enough blues chord progressions and guitar solos to last me the rest of my life. I have other playlists I like, but I expect most folks here will hate them. :ha

I really like the YouTube videos from this guy Dovydas. It would be a real treat to someday see his improvisational skills at work. Dovydas hails from Lithuania and busks around the US. Here he is with another busker, Karolina Protsenko, from the Ukraine. They are in Santa Monica, Calif. Alas, this was in happier times for SoCal.

RIP Sam Moore- 89 years.

Reminds me of marveling at having a transistor radio that proudly had “9 transistors” imprinted on the face of the radio.
