Spark plug condition 2009 R1200RT

These are plugs from my 2009 R1200RT that were changed at 25,000 miles. Are these what they should look like? Replacing them with Iridium NGK's.

First set of plugs at 25K? :scratch

Guessing the darker two in each set are the lowers as our 1200's wear that way.

Pictures aren't real clear...I'll just say they were done. Use Iridiums as well now.
 
On my oilhead ('04), the peripheral plugs always come out a bit darker than the center plugs, and yours look "typical" to me.

Oddly, last time I checked the NGK site, they actually want an even colder plug (for the 1150; heat range 8, instead of 6 or 7) if you go for the iridiums, but I stick to the "standards" and have no problems with 'em.
 
They're done. The center electrode is rounded off - new it has sharp edges to help "focus" the spark. The outside electrodes also exhibit rounded edges.

New is due.
 
With the three 07-09' s we have, none have looked good after 12K, the center electrodes are usually oval by then.

That may be why they changed to 12K. Mine have 15K and are still running fine. I will keep my ears open.
 
Hard to tell in this pic, camhead has a 10mm plug the hexheads are 12mm (I THINK)as well.

It is a tiny plug compared to the standard size in most other models. At 12 K the last few I looked at were used up

Yes, I think the reduction in size created the shorter change interval. Less material to start with.

But, Mercedes M112 and M113 engines used 12 mm plugs (platinum) and the change interval was 100K miles.
 
I just changed plugs at 15K miles on my 2012 RT. I was surprised at how dark the bottom plug was. Doesn't seem like a great place to put a plug on a boxer. ?

Might not be a great place - but it's a necessary place. The purpose of the bottom plug is to start two flame-fronts when the mixture ignites, allowing it to burn completely, and eliminating the lean-surge condition the R11 and R1150 bikes had (until the R1150xx bikes got dual plugs in '04..) It works and I'm not staying awake nights worrying about the bottom plug being darker. You can always swap the plugs center to bottom when you're checking the valve clearances.
 
Iridiums for Camheads

A little off topic, but does anyone know if there are Iridium spark plugs available for the Camhead yet?

My recent Google searches have not yielded any positive results yet.

BTW - "tgf429" , my 2012 R1200RT plugs look the same, darker on the lower plug. Especially the left side. When it is on the kickstand, a little oil must settle around the plug.

Good idea, Don! But, I'd rather have 100,000 mile plugs like in my 505 HP Chevy. No lean surge or two flame-fronts when the mixture ignites, etc. Sounds too complicated for my simple brain. ;) Oh, and no valve clearance adjustments, either. :clap
