Russell Day Long Seats - Materials thoughts?

Cutaway pic of a typical RDL (not my pic).

The end of the spring is covered in the picture with some tan padding. I can feel the end of the spring if I squeeze my RDL's wing in that area.

IIRC, RDL installs the transverse spring if the rider weight is 245 or higher. Below that, I think it is either omitted or a by-request option.

They all have a spring. I don't think a magnet will tell you much. Heavy Duty versions have a different spring setup. While $500 seems a lot for a rebuild, it is basically like starting with an unmodified seat again. I doubt it would have to be rebuilt. I have sent back Russell seats to be recovered. One was a grey leather that looked like crap so I went to black. Don't remember cost, but somewhere around $150 or so. Looked like new!
