bike in neutral, kickstand down.

turn the key on.

motor starts w/out the start button. and runs okay. i.e, the starter disengages.

every time for two days.

cycled kill switch (once) with key off.

problem gone.

anybody else?

Is the starter still running when it did that? Sticking starter solenoid?

Starter button stuck? That'd make sense since the kill switch fixed it.

so the starter must disengage properly.

The starter on the hexheads is controlled by the engine control module, and won't engage (and I guess must disengage) when it reaches a set engine speed.

I'd be looking at the starter button/switch, and perhaps the starter relay under the seat (the only relay on R12xx bikes..) If you have a GS-911 it can tell you if the ECU thinks the starter button is depressed.
