So as prieviously repoted, I continued to stick to my guns and go with Paul's advice (also David Peters, master tech at Pensacola BMW). Draining the oil hot, bought the new advantec oil. Drinking my wine after a long day on the bike back and forth to Pensacola putting fresh oil in the ole girl. Life is good.
 
Spectro makes a very good synthetic 5w-40 and Mobile-1, 10W-40 is an excellent oil too. The difference between a 5w-40 and a 10w-40 is not going tio be an issue, unless you are trying to start a motor in subfreezing conditions and probably not even then. I have been told that BMW contracts with Castrol to make their oils. If you do a little research on oils, Castrol does not score well against other motor oil producers.

Considering the distances that most of us live from their closest BMW dealers and my doubt that there is anything particularly special about BMW branded oils, I will stick with Spectro and Mobile-1. The latter is readily available at auto parts stores and even Walmart, all over the USA.


I'm gonna catch flak for this but I got my K-Vest on. If you are not poor, struggling, trying to make ends meet... Spend the extra nickel (the nickel part is a figure of speech people) and take the guess work out of it and just get the BMW stuff. FWIW I've noticed that occasionally as research I assume it's research, is done the "official" spec on the oil changes. I know the rear drive oil on my 2005 R1200RT has changed since I've owned it, to include the quanity ((220ml changed to 180ml)). I think the recommended weight and grade has changed at least once on the engine. Either way, develope that relationship with your dealer. Treat your BMW motorcycle like a golfer treats his bag of clubs, like its a passion, and the equipment used in the pursuit of that passion is the best his wife will allow him to buy.

Gallantly will I show the world that I am a specially selected and well trained soldier. My courtesy to superior officers, neatness of dress, and care of equipment shall set the example for others to follow.
 
Look folks: Using a BMW recommended oil is the best way to ensure you are using a specified oil. But if you can read and understand specifications then you can also find other oils that meet the specifications. That is what is important.

Or, on the other hand, you can read all of the stuff that we post on the Internet about our favorite oils that might or might not meet BMW specifications. For years I railed against the clowns that swore that 10W40 diesel oil was perfect in bikes where BMW specified 20W50 oils. But the multilevel marketing scam geniuses still swore by their synthetic swill. Good oil - bad application.

My advice: Read and understand the actual, real, honest to God, BMW specifications. Find an oil that meets these specifications that is easy to buy at a cost you can tolerate. Then use it. Be happy!!

I'm not going to worry about needing oil on a trip. My wethead R1200GS from New York to Billings and return did not use any oil.

I did order oil filters and washers online from Beemerboneyard or something like that. Coming from a Harley Davidson background, I am very skeptical of manufacturer lubricants, knowing that Harley put their branded oil out to bid ever couple of years, always taking the lowest bid that met the basic spec, without regard to the advantages of some of the premium oils that are available - Red Line, Spectro, and Mobile-1. All of the aforementioned oils use 100% synthetic base stocks, which sounds like what BMW is describing in the specs for their part# 83212365958 5w-40 synthetic oil. The price of the BMW oil are actually the same as Spectro and a couple of dollars more than Mobile-1. (Not that a few dollars means anything when buying oil.)


[My friends who own an independent motorcycle repair shop in Denver, NC, told me that they have had an unusually high number engine failures among riders who were using Amsoil products. Most involved bearing failures, sometimes catastrophic failures that caused significant motor damage. All of the motorcycles were V-Twins.] I know a lot of people who swear by Amsoil products. It is very popular among Goldwing riders, at least in my neck of the woods.

BMW oils and filters are readily available online like Sierra BMW and Max BMW to name a couple, and will ship all over the USA right to your door. Even more convent than a trip to wall mart.
 
These oil threads are so entertaining, but I don't get the problem. Read the specs buy an oil that you can afford that meets the specs. How hard is that.

On my 1200RTLC the owners manual says "SAE 5W-40, API SL / JASO MA2, additives (for

This comes from the R1200RS Forum and it seems credible. You can get great protection at a better price than the BMW branded oil. It is available on Amazon. This oil is manufactured from natural gas.

So, as you can see, oil viscosity plays no particular role in an oil’s wear protection capability. As mentioned above, an oil’s wear protection capability is determined by its base oil and its additive package “as a whole”, with the primary emphasis on the additive package, which contains the extreme pressure components.

Wear protection reference categories are:

• Over 105,000 psi = INCREDIBLE wear protection

• 90,000 to 105,000 psi = OUTSTANDING wear protection

• 75,000 to 90,000 psi = GOOD wear protection

• 60,000 to 75,000 psi = MODEST wear protection

• Below 60,000 psi = UNDESIRABLE wear protection

All the oils were tested at a representative operational temperature of 230*F.

The HIGHER the psi value, the BETTER the Wear Protection.

1. 5W30 Pennzoil Ultra, API SM synthetic = 115,612 psi
I have not been able to find this oil with the latest API SN certification. The bottle says, “No leading synthetic oil provides better wear protection”. For once, a product’s hype turns out to be true. And this oil provides MORE THAN TWICE as much wear protection as the lowest ranked oil on this list.
Chrysler is so impressed with Pennzoil Ultra, that they selected the 0W40 version of it as the only Factory Fill oil for their latest 8.4L, 640 HP, V-10, 200+ mph, Dodge SRT Viper.

4. 5W30 Oil Extreme, API SM synthetic (per the Oil Company, even though synthetic wording is not shown on the label) = 110,286 psi
The Company claims this oil contains their proprietary formula of calcium petroleum sulfontate EP (Extreme Pressure) technology that is NOT found in any other motor oil. They also claim that it will provide 5 to 7 more HP, 7 to 10% better fuel mileage, cut engine wear in half, and will extend drain intervals two or three times safely. This oil is endorsed and promoted by Tech Author David Vizard. And he was so impressed by this oil’s performance that he also became a share holder in the Company. The results from the “Dynamic Wear Testing Under Load” performed here, fully supports their claim regarding wear protection. So, their hype about that, turned out to be absolutely true. And since this oil beat every high zinc oil I’ve ever tested, it also proved another one of their claims, that using zinc as the primary anti-wear component, is outdated technology.

This is BY FAR, the highest ranked Diesel oil I have ever tested. This oil is Engineered for Diesel engines not equipped with Diesel particulate filters (DPF). Amsoil says this oil delivers better wear protection than other popular Diesel oils. And in this case, their hype is absolutely true. They also say it effectively reduces fuel consumption, with its advanced fuel efficient formula. This oil costs $11.15 per quart in the 2013 Amsoil Factory Direct Retail Catalog, which is 10% more than Amsoil’s 5W40 Premium Synthetic Diesel Oil. So, in this case, you pay only 10% more for the Amsoil Series 3000 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil, but you get a whopping 33% more wear protection than you get with the Amsoil’s 5W40 Premium Synthetic Diesel Oil. Money very well spent, if you run a Diesel oil intended for engines not equipped with Diesel particulate filters. The next highest ranked Diesel oil only ranks a very unimpressive 54th out of the 118 oils I’ve tested so far. So, this 5W30 Amsoil Series 3000 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil is in a class of its own, among all the Diesel oils I have tested.

THE BENEFITS OF USING THINNER OIL:

• Thinner oil flows quicker at cold start-up to begin lubricating critical engine components much more quickly than thicker oil can. Most engine wear takes place during cold start-up before oil flow can reach all the components. So, quicker flowing thinner oil will help reduce start-up engine wear, which is actually reducing wear overall.

• The more free flowing thinner oil at cold start-up, is also much less likely to cause the oil filter bypass to open up, compared to thicker oil. Of course if the bypass opened up, that would allow unfiltered oil to be pumped through the engine. The colder the ambient temperature, and the more rpm used when the engine is cold, the more important this becomes.

• Thinner oil also flows more at normal operating temperatures. And oil FLOW is lubrication, but oil pressure is NOT lubrication. Oil pressure is only a measurement of resistance to flow. Running thicker oil just to up the oil pressure is the wrong thing to do, because that only reduces oil flow/lubrication. Oil pressure in and of itself, is NOT what we are after.

• The more free flowing thinner oil will also drain back to the oil pan quicker than thicker oil. So, thinner oil can help maintain a higher oil level in the oil pan during operation, which keeps the oil pump pickup from possibly sucking air during braking and cornering.

• The old rule of thumb that we should have at least 10 psi for every 1,000 rpm is perfectly fine. Running thicker oil to achieve more pressure than that, will simply reduce oil flow for no good reason. It is best to run the thinnest oil we can, that will still maintain at least the rule of thumb oil pressure. And one of the benefits of running a high volume oil pump, is that it will allow us to enjoy all the benefits of running thinner oil, while still maintaining sufficient oil pressure. A high volume oil pump/thinner oil combo is preferred over running a standard volume oil pump/thicker oil combo. Because oil “flow” is our goal for ideal oiling, NOT simply high oil pressure.

• Oil flow is what carries heat away from internal engine components. Those engine components are DIRECTLY oil cooled, but only INdirectly water cooled. And better flowing thinner oil will keep critical engine components cooler because it carries heat away faster. If you run thicker oil than needed, you will be driving up engine component temps.

• Thinner oil will typically increase HP because of less viscous drag and reduced pumping losses, compared to thicker oils. That is why very serious Race efforts will generally use watery thin oils in their engines. But, an exception to this increase in HP would be in high rpm hydraulic lifter engines, where thinner oil can allow the lifters to bleed-off at higher rpm. In everyday street vehicles, where fuel consumption is a consideration, thinner oils will also typically increase fuel economy. The majority of new cars sold in the U.S. now call for 5W20 specifically for increased fuel economy. And now Diesel trucks are increasingly calling for 5W30, also for fuel economy improvement.

• With the exception of high rpm hydraulic lifter engines, almost no engine should ever need to run oil thicker than a multi-viscosity 30 weight. The lower the first number cold viscosity rating, the better the cold flow. For example, 0W30 flows WAY better cold than 20W50. And 0W30 flows WAY better cold than straight 30wt, which is horrible for cold start-up flow and should be avoided at all cost. And the lower the second number hot viscosity rating, the better the hot flow. For example, 0W30 flows WAY better hot than 20W50.

• Thicker oil DOES NOT automatically provide better wear protection than thinner oils. Extensive “dynamic wear testing under load” of dozens and dozens of motor oils, has shown that the base oil and its additive package “as a whole”, is what determines an oil’s wear protection capability, NOT its viscosity. For example, some 5W20 oils have proven to provide OUTSTANDING wear protection, while some 15W50 oils have only been able to provide MODEST wear protection. So, do not run thicker oil under the false assumption that it can provide better wear protection for our engines.

• BOTTOM LINE: Thinner oils are better for most engine lubrication needs.

Seriously?

I'll trust BMW's recommendations regarding viscosity.

And BMW branded oil is not super expensive. The bike was; the oil isn't.

The BMW dealer told me not to use synthetic oil in my new R1200GS when I took delivery of the bike: he was mistaken. The bike came with synthetic oil from the factory, and the BMW oil for that bike is full synthetic.

I refuse to over-think this.

Now that's hilarious (that the dealer didn't know the bike came with synthetic. I hope it was the salesman, and not the service department telling you that).
 
I thought the entire oil issue was resolved three or four oil threads ago. If only BMW would publish some info that describes the specifications for the oils to use in their bikes in the owner's manual..... and a chart showing which viscosity to use in a given temperature range would be handy too. Then owners could buy any oil they like so long as it met the specifications in the manual. Oh well, maybe someday.
