Rolls-Royce Motor Cars: Speech by Ian Robertson, Chairman and Chief Executive at NAIAS 2008 Press Conference.
14.01.2008
The spoken word is applicable.
Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for joining us this afternoon.
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars had an exceptional year in 2007. We celebrate our fifth anniversary of production at the top of the super-luxury sedan segment, with a record sales result and a promise of major developments over the next two years.
I am delighted to say that Rolls-Royce saw sales in 2007 increase dramatically by 25 per cent compared to 2006, with retails of over 1000 cars ÔÇô 1010 to be exact. This is a significant point in the history of our company - the first time that our annual sales have reached four figures and our fourth successive sales increase since the company was launched.
North America once again remained our strongest market overall, accounting for around 40 per cent of Phantom sales. We saw exceptional performances in the United Arab Emirates and in Asia Pacific too, particularly China, and in emerging markets such as India. We also continued to spread our sales reach into new markets, with Phantoms sold for the first time in Armenia, Angola, Philippines and Egypt.
The Rolls-Royce dealer network now stands at 80, with new showrooms opening across the world including St Petersburg, Kiev and Dresden. Our best performing dealer, Beverly Hills, once again recorded the highest sales followed by London in second place. Abu Dhabi, placed third, had a spectacular year, with sales more than doubling.
There was strong demand for all Phantom models in 2007, with an outstanding reaction to the Phantom Drophead Coup?®, launched in July. Rarely has there been such universal praise for a new car and this was reflected in sales. The first car was sold for $2 million at a charity auction here in the US and by the end of 2007 over 250 cars had been delivered to customers worldwide, far above expectations. Our order book is currently full through this year and well into 2009, with no signs of demand slowing.
The four door sedan models - Phantom and Phantom Extended Wheelbase - remained the best sellers, and with strong forward orders we will soon build our 4000th Phantom since the launch in 2003. The Extended Wheelbase model accounted for a quarter of all Phantom four-door sales worldwide in 2007 and over half of Asia Pacific sales were for the longer car. Several special variants were also launched, including the coach built Phantom Armoured, with the first car delivered to the Middle East in the autumn.
This year we launch a new member of the Phantom family, a series version of the two-door, four-seat experimental coup?®, 101EX. The car has already received widespread acclaim, even before production has started, and we have a healthy advance order book. We expect to see the first customer cars in the summer.
And it doesnÔÇÖt stop there. Our new model series, currently named RR4, is due for launch in 2010. The engineering development is now well under way ÔÇô in fact, I recently drove an early test car and can confirm that it is an outstanding product and, as importantly, an authentic Rolls-Royce.
To date I havenÔÇÖt been able to tell you much about RR4, but I can announce today that we are developing a brand new engine for this model series. Phantom is already the most efficient car in the super luxury segment and the new engine will be a further substantial advance.
Building work at our manufacturing plant at Goodwood is now underway, expanding operations in readiness for our new model series. This is the largest building programme since the manufacturing plant was first built in 2002, but, crucially, we are not expanding the footprint of the building ÔÇô the site was designed from the outset to allow for future development. We are introducing a second assembly line and new working patterns, with up to three shifts in some production areas. All departments will be expanded, including a new leathershop across two floors and an updated logistics operation.
Our workforce at Goodwood currently stands at over 700, around two thirds in manufacturing, most of whom are skilled craftsmen and women. We invest heavily in people at Rolls-Royce ÔÇô our cars are, after all, individually hand built to order - and last year saw the second annual intake of apprentices and the launch of our new graduate training scheme. A major recruitment campaign starts later this month and will continue through this year and next. We will have substantially increased the workforce by the start of production of the new model series in 2010.
It has been an incredible year for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and with our terrific sales result we are very firmly at the top of our segment. We move forward into 2008 with a clear focus, a profitable and developing business, an expanded product portfolio and a promise of much more to come.
Thank you.
