Laptop conundrum - Mac or Windows

If I had the power, I would wipe that application from the planet. :sick

And I'd help! One of my stage managers (another mac-ie) laughed out loud when I said "WTF ever happened to Claris Works"?

I need to buy a new laptop for work and I really would like a Mac PowerBook. I work in advertising and Mac is more graphics and video friendly.

However, I am also a motorcycle rider and the Garmin Mapsource software for my GPS cannot run on an Mac. I'm not 100% sure, but I've heard that S&T cannot be run on a Mac either. I have a really old (Windows) laptop right now that I take on trips with me, but I'd love to replace it - it seems silly to have two laptops.

So what's a gal to do? Are there any other Mac users here? What is your solution? Or am I forever doomed to Windows? TIA.

Leave the old windows notebook at home and get one of those pocket pc contraptions. You can find gps software aplenty for it and it doesn't take up hardly any space.

Are we finished yet?

(Lemme start over)

Dear Rebecca,
Get a mac
(and have a great time with it) :)

..

This is fun. What do you think of Beta vs VHS? Beta right?

Rebecca, I am shopping for a 12"mac laptop for my son right now so here's a couple of tips. Our company has bought from both these sources. CDW is always the least expensive and there is no tax charged as there is if you order directly from apple

CDW -1-800-622-6222 x30431 talk to Alicia and tell her what you are looking for. Mention you might be interested in an overstock or an open box return. They sell those at discount prices.. Even the exact product they sell at the Apple store is a little less in cost at CDW. Sometimes they have deals such as free ram or a free printers as part of the price.

And then I think someone else mentioned the Apple site and the refurbished laptops they have there. We have bought those as well with out any problems. They offer the same warranty/guarantee as the new ones at reduced costs.

My first Mac!

Dear folks,

Due in part to your generous input I am now the proud owner of a 15" G4 PowerBook. 512mb RAM, Superdrive, 80GB harddrive, 1 year warranty. $1499 because it was a demo (at an IL Apple store). Yes, I got Applecare.

:newtoy

I wish that I could have waited for new chips, etc but this has been way overdue already. I'll keep the old windows laptop for running Mapsource and S&T for motorcycle touring and competitive rallies.

Any tips, tricks or suggestions to a Mac N00b are welcome and appreciated! :)

Congrats! My only real suggestion would be that if you intend to do anything with fonts, while the Font Book app that comes bundled with is ok, Font Agent Pro is a much better handler.

And MacWorld is a pretty good resource for info, tip & tricks, reviews, etc.

I bought the Dummy's Guide for OS X. It's got 7 other books in it, that help explain how the iLife suite works, how Automator works and how to navigate Finder and such.

It's been quite helpful for 95% of the things I do with my Mac.

Oh - I really like Camino for a browser. It's from Mozilla.

Amen. I dropped mine out of the car while in my briefcase and it dislodged the airport card.

It kept going into kernel panic (new mac tech term for me... I thought the Apple guy was calling me Colonel Panic!) the Applecare people had me re-install OS-X (oh, man... what a pain) before I trouble-shot the problem and fixed it myself.

Jeez.

(kernel panic = blue screen of death)

Yeah, the total volume is about 7 or 800 pages, which works out to a fairly small book for each of the topics.

Thanks for the tips from Macworld. :thumb

You broke my Windows heart

OK, enough of that

Rebecca let me know if you want Virtual PC & Windows XP. I bought them for a friend a while back & he decided to buy a PC instead. They have been sitting in my office for almost a year. I am not sure but this may allow you to use your Gamin software.

I know nothing about Macs.

PM or e-mail me if you want them.

Kind Regards,

I love the new laptop - thanks for asking! It's been a very easy transition from Windows to Mac. And everything is more attractive on a Mac - the computer itself, the software, the colors - I like using the computer more.

I like it so much that I might even name it like I name my bikes. :) :wave

The only downside is that I don't have Streets and Trips on the laptop and I miss it. It's scary how much I use that program. Grey Matter - I'm sending you a PM and thanks.

I'll be interested to hear how that works out. I use Streets and Trips at home, but not on the road so far.
I haven't bought a new (small) laptop yet to take along. I was headed toward the IBook when all the chip changes came out and I was waiting for them to settle. I got along without computerized travel so far, but seems like it would be a good thing. With this BMW Nav II+ which has all NA in it, I could find where the motels, etc. are and that is what would be good. I can remember riding along, wondering if this town or the next would have that ideal motel, a Hampton Inn, next to a Mexican resturant. Once we slept in our riding clothes and boots on top of the bed still made. Not a great motel. Then we ride 20 miles the next day and see where we should have stayed. We never plan ahead so instant info from the Nav will probably be our main help, but looking ahead on S &T the night before would be a good thing.
