Help - O2 Sensor disconnects how?

nrpetersen

Curmudgeon
Doing a spline lube on the 2000 R1100RT & have to disconnect the O2 sensor to remove the exhaust system. Chiltons manual doesn't describe how it is connected.

Does the white plastic connector only get pulled off, or does the entire metal cap & white shell have a bayonet base etc to the shell of the O2 sensor. I don't want to damage it & can't really get my hand in there to feel. THX

I've only disconnected the O2 sensor one time but from what I remember if the follow the wire from the sensor up the right side of the engine you'll find the connector. Simply unplug it. There is no plug right at the sensor.

likely to be a zip-tie that wants to be cut; it's holding the wire in against the frame. it was up under the gas tank on my 11S, probably same for your RT.

After the exhaust was removed from the rear hanger, the two shock mounts on the center stand and front clamp, I used a large adjustable wrench and unscrewed it from the pipe. There was enough length in the wire lead that it worked fine. Before I reattached it I put four or five twists in the wire lead and screwed it back in. No trouble at all on my R1100RS with 74k miles.

They make a slotted socket for removal of O2 sensors. You can get them pretty inexpensively at Harbor Freight.
