GSA center stand breaks:(

Be aware that the side stand has "serviceable" bushings that need replaced every so often. I use my center stand all the time. I never have and never will drive off of it. I use the sidestand everyday too. It must be on the sidestand for me to get on the bike.

I used to climb up on the left peg and swing my right leg over the seat, while of course, the sidestand held the bike up. I have a 30" inseam. But this wore out the bushings on the sidestand and it developed quite a "wobble".

So my dealer replaced the bushings, sidestand is now nice and tight, and I now still use the sidestand, but raise my right leg higher and up and over the seat I go. But it did take me about two weeks before I could do it without felling as though I was going to rip myself in two doing so. And, to do so, I must turn the handlebars all the way to the right first.

As stated in a previous post. I suffered the centerstand issue too. Now the sidestand. But both are fixed, I have extra sidestand bolts, and I'm off and running. No big deal.

By the way, I have a 1977 Honda 750A which has also always been out on its centerstand. Man is that a beast compared to the GSA. A baby can put the GSA on its centerstand compared to how much work it takes to put the Honda up.
 
Hey all. Going through the bike and figured I'd take a look at the center stand bolts. Failure mode for me is that my laptop just cratered so I can't access the maintenance DVD (hitting the forum from the iPad). Anyone able to put their hands on the torque settings for the center stand bolts - 08 1200 GS.

No on the CS bolt torque value, but blue locktite will prevent any issues with it loosening. Just make it tight! Randy.
 
That's what I ended up doing and all seems OK. Of course, TIGHT was a lot simpler before the invention of Torx bolts! ;)

i also had these bolts break, once on my 05 rt and once on my 07gs, i was able to find a grade 12 bolt at a local fastenall store and cost 67cents apiece, i bought a box of 25 so i guess ill just change them during 24000 service
 
Good advice. I think I'll check my CS this weekend (08 RT) 16K. I found one of the bolts very loose about six months ago and tightened her up, I did not clean or lube any parts though.

Here is a torque listing for 2005 models...would think most are the same on current models...says 40Nm for centerstand to frame...I use blue loctite anyways as well.

I have all the pieces to do both center & sidestand on my '09 next oil change...in about a week. I climb on the peg and throw my leg over on the sidestand a lot, but don't ride off the centerstand...well not too many times in the past anyways :whistle :doh

Probably a good plan. These bolts are 'sealed' with loc-tite, so they're not really designed for disassembly, a visual check and then reassembly.

My advice: Swap them out for new ones every 24-36,000 miles, just to be safe.

I know - lots of guys thinking "Hey - NEVER had a problem with my center stand bolts (or Final Drive, or rear shock, or oil or whatever) in all the years I've owned my BMW."

To that, I can only say "Good for you!!"

Just not making them like they used to, so us 'latest generation' guys have to come up with strategies to deal with problems BMW NA refuses to admit exist.

Well, that's not cheering me up.

Sorry 'bout that! He put about 109K on his R90/6 and never quite felt comfortable putting over 100K on his subsequent bikes. Then one had a diode board failure... of course far away from home with my brother riding the bike. :deal

Hey - at least he's smiling, has coffee and looks like the Beemer is securely strapped down for the trip home.

No way to go touring, but could be worse. :thumb
