gearbox bearings

Hi guys , I have my 2000 r1100rt 5 speed gearbox stripped down at the moment and was wondering if I was to remove the inner bearing seals would the gearbox bearings benefit from the extra oil?, instead of the sealed so called clean bearings as useual thanks in advance Jimmy

Leaving the seal off would have saved BMW a half a penny per bearing.
If they could have, they would have.

Not worth taking a chance, IMHO.

Sealed bearings in a gearbox full of lubricating oil make no sense to me. In a wheel bearing sure; in a gearbox? Nope...
But I am not a pro mechanic.

I would ask Anton Largiader that question as he rebuilds them for a living. Would be interesting to see what he thinks.

Removing the "seals" will shorten their life.

Those bearings are TM bearings which are specially designed for manual transmissions. They are marked as such.
They leak oil thru the while filtering out contaminants.
Not to be confused with 2RS standard sealed bearings.
Open bearings will fail much sooner.
