F900R Oil Capacity

I recently changed my oil and filter. I put in the 3 litres of oil as stated in the oil capacity specs. Then, I ran the bike using the recommended protocol to check the oil level using the dipstick. Checking the dipstick, I found that the oil level was at the minimum mark. I repeated the protocol after the oil had cooled, and the result was the same.

Am I missing something here? Is the capacity specification with or without a filter change? Or could there be a potential problem with the motor?

Thank you in advance for any enlightenment.

there are two types of oil filters a short one that BMW use from factory and the taller filter. It can also depend on the manufacture of the oil filter. I have run it the same problem, with my 750 and 850, when i purchased oil filters I received a short filter and a tall filter.

Thanks for that info. I just switched to an aftermarket filter, a HiFlo. I had previously used BMW OEM filters. I think the HiFlo is a bit taller.

The manual shows 0.5 liters difference between the Min and Max on the dipstick.
I don't think the aftermarket filter would make that much difference.

I have a 2020 F900XR. If I check the oil with the engine cold, it's low. If I follow the weird instructions in the owner's manual, it's in the upper half of the dipstick. Here is copy and paste with the unexpected parts bolded:

Misinterpretation of the oil filling quantity, as the oil level is temperature-dependent (the higher the temperature, the higher the oil level)
Engine damage

  1. Only check the oil level after a longer journey or when the engine is warm.
  2. Wipe the area around the oil filler opening clean.
  3. Allow the engine to idle until the fan starts up, then allow it to idle one minute longer.
  4. Switch off engine.
  5. Make sure ground is level and firm and hold motorcycle at operating temperature vertically.
  6. BMW Motorrad recommends the use of a suitable auxiliary stand. (like center stand)
  7. I'll skip over the warnings against dropping the motorcycle.
  8. Wait five minutes to allow oil to drain into the oil pan.
  9. Remove oil level dipstick.
  10. Clean measuring range using a dry cloth Fit the oil level dipstick onto the oil filler opening, however do not screw in.
  11. Remove oil level dipstick and check oil level.

Is it a dry sump engine.
The K1300 is a dry sump and after riding you had to let the engine idle for a minute to pump oil back to the tank before checking oil.

Yes, it's an internal sump engine and it takes time for the oil to return, just like you said.

When you drain the oil, you start with the external drain plug. After some of the oil drains out, put a hex socket on an extension. Stick that into the hole to remove the sump's drain bolt and release the rest of the oil.
