Differences between 02-04 K1200 RS & K1200 GT

Hello All,

My first post on the forum even though I have belonged to MOA for 19 years. I currently ride a 95 R1100GS which I purchased new. Prior to that I owned a 1991 K100RS that I really disliked due to engine buzz.

My close friend purchased a slightly used K1100RS when I bought my GS in 95. He thought all the engine buzz was gone but when I tried it, I still didn't like the engine.

He then purchased a 2004 K1200RS. He bragged again that the engine was smoother than ever. I was skeptical but tried it anyway. It was a great ride and now I'm considering a K1200 bike between 2002 & 2004. Not sure if I want the RS or GT. They both look very similar but perhaps some of the member owners can point me to the right model. I'm 6'2" tall with a 34" inseam. My shirt size is 15X34 and I weigh about 185 lbs.

What are the differences between the RS & GT of those years? Would one be better for my size?

What I find interesting is that the K bike first came out around 1985. BMW finally got the engine perfect in the K1200 series and then scrapped it in 2004.

Thr GT has slightly higher and backset handle bars, an electric operated windscreen which is slightly taller than the RS, painted saddlebag lids, and I think the heated seat was standard. Otherwise, same bike. Only you can decide which fits better, ride one of each.

Then there's the extra fairing pieces; rubber deflectors at the legs and more protection for your hands. Oh, and don't forget the extra money you'll part with for a GT.

Well, I am 6' and about 185, similar inseam, etc. I have the RS with the original highe pegs and have ridden my buddies 04 GT a lot. For me the RS is the way to go, for him (and he is the same size, etc) he needed barbacks on the GT. It is more dependant on your style of riding. I also have the S, so......
