Cutting a BMW Key

mehrten

Mehrten
2008 K1200GT.

I bought the bike with a rear trunk that was not keyed to the bike's ignition. Consequently, I have to carry two keys. No big deal.

But, I only have one key for the trunk. I would like to have a spare key cut to match the trunk key.

Seems the inner-cut keys are a problem to get cut in my local area.

Has anyone had a BMW inner-cut key done?

Appreciate it.

Is the trunk a BMW trunk? You can key it to the ignition by changing the wafers in the lock assembly. I've changed my 49L top box twice to accommodate an RT and my 13GT.

Deryle,
As Tonyfr pointed out, changing the wafers so your original bike key works is probably your best bet. I have a local locksmith, a very good one, who has told me he can cut the double-faced BMW keys BUT even tho we have the ID numbers for the correct blanks, the blanks are not available to locksmiths. He runs into the same issue with the BMW cars.

Best,
DeVern

Re-keying the lock is the way to go (as long as you don't have some special security concern where this is undesirable) and it's trivial to do if you have a set of wafers. Your dealer, or local independent should be able to do it. If you were here it would take ten minutes. Worst case you can mail it to me, but there MUST be someone nearby who can do it.

This was written for the R1100/1150 style locks, but the newer side-cut system works the same way.

Appreciate the help!
James, Shop Manager at Iron Horse, had a blank stashed away and gave it to me.
A local lock smith had no problem doing a laser cut.
Thank you,

I believe the closest BMW dealer is RideNow in Chandler, or GoAZ in Scottsdale.

I have a 22 GSA with keyless ride and all 3 BMW boxes. Using the fob for the boxes, seats, and nav, gave me much fear of breaking the fob. This website is where I got another key cut. You give them your 4 digit key code, and for like $25, key is shipped to your door.

And please let us all know where you find the code.
If you saved it, a new bike comes with a small plastic piece with a paper tag attached. The code is printed on the paper tag and plastic thing.
This is usually included in the package with the Rider Manual and Warranty book.
A dealer can also order a key using the bike VIN.

Spare key and tag usually not included when buying a used bike, however. And the dealer wants too much money for a key.

Both the 21 GS and the 22 GSA I bought used have keyless ride, and included the plastic emergency key and key code plastic thingy.

Non-chipped key blanks are available on Amazon for cheap. The second locksmith I called was able to do the internal key cut.

Can you buy the blanks from BMW and then take to local locksmith? I had tro do that for a 90 Honda PC800 that I wanted an extra key. Honda didn't want to cut it...
