Advice: tank bag for 07 R1200R

Welcome to the forum Jim:wave

Depends on how big you prefer and if you want a map pocket or not.

H has one of these magnetic styles from Nelson-Rigg on her R12R and earlier Roadsters. Only issue is it WILL add some scratches at some point from stuff getting on magnet pads and sliding against tank at removal. The model she has had for years has a funny shaped map pocket...not a deal breaker for her, but drives me crazy having to do folds to fit.

The two lock ring style mounts sit the bags higher, but avoids tank contact. It just adds some expense for the tank ring mount kit. I tried a set up like this on one of our bikes, but it looked strange sitting off the tank (R12S)

:wave check RKA. First off what you want to carry in it, for size. Then you have all kinds of options.

I have the 10L RKA on my 07' R and really like it.

However; after I purchased it they came out with a much lower profile 3L version. I would have purchased that 3L one if it was available because I don't carry a lot in my tank bag, just little things like wallet, phone, sun block, etc.

I tried a bunch on my 2010 R12R before settling on a Held magnetic one (http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/held-case-magnetic-tank-bag). I have an RT now so would sell the Held for a song if you're interested. I probably cut the carrying handle off of it since I never used it.

I now have a Givi ring mounted one on my RT. That would be a good option for an RT as well. I also bought one of those (http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/givi-xs307-tanklock-tankbag), cut the handle off, then decided I didn't like the hook, so would also part with it for a song.

I have the same GIVI one http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/givi-xs307-tanklock-tankbag on my '12 R1200R. I like it. It's not big so it keeps me from filling it with crap I'll never use on the road. It's very easy to R&R for gas fillups, and it's secure (doesn't move around). As many other people have done - I cut the strap on the front off. The strap is meant to go around the "steering head" - but it would make it hard to remove for fueling up, and pretty much useless otherwise. I think 99% of the people who have bought and review it have cut that strap off.

I made up a divider thingie for the inside out of some corrugated plastic sheeting from an old filing box. I have it split into 4 compartments, none of them the same size (on purpose) - and it helps keep things sorted out. If you get one and want a picture - ping me. I'll add one to this posting. The secondary "tablet" pocket seems rather useless to me since it's sorta floppy without a tablet in it. So far the built in map-pocket has worked fine. It's semi-waterproof without the rain cover, but it does come with a rain cover, and the inner liner bag is like BMWs - it's waterproof.

All in all - it's a nice bag. My former bags are RKA bags - which I've kept in case I decide I need to carry a lot of crappola..

Tank bag heat

This is a bit off topic but I have a question about the temperature in my BMW tank bag on my RT. Is the high heat caused by the plastic top? I never use the map pocket feature anyway and would happily get rid of the yellowed plastic if it would reduce the heat build up in the bag.

Any advice?

Thanks,

I don't think it's the plastic top, it's the black fabric of the entire bag absorbing sunlight. Mine seems to get a bit warmer if the map pocket is empty. Filling the pocket with a map or directions on white paper seems to reflect a little heat.

The heat is an issue mainly for electronics. Without air circulation around the device, the heat cannot dissipate. An always-on display and battery charging just add to the heat build-up.
