2006 R1200RT just suddenly dead?

Hi Guys,

My fuel sensor has being playing up and I was exploring Zapping it. But waiting to see if it just came on again like it did last week. In the meantime I started the bike yesterday just to see if the sensor had started working but to no avail. This morning when I was about to head into town the bike was totally dead. Keys were not in it overnight or anything as I store the keys else where. Previous owner told me the fuel sensor had stopped once on him previously but just worked again. Also the previous owner gave me the Ctec charger that he used for the life of his ownership (original owner). He had only recently replaced the battery. When I was away for a week (last week) I put the Ctec charger on the bike. I have ridden it many times over the week since with no problem other than the fuel strip not showing me the level of fuel. What are your suggestions? My check of the battery shows a healthy 12.8 Volts? Where do I start on this hick up?

Please note I have no dash power at all, No cranking nothing?? Bike is like there is no battery in it all all?

I look forward to any direction I can get,

Cheers Aussie Bob.

How old is the battery? I see you have a meter, if you can set it up so you can observe the voltage during the crank cycle- that may help.
If it is an older battery, see what happens after an overnight charge. A weak battery with a couple of "take a look" starts could be the culprit.

The battery shows 12.8 volts. I have notdash, no cranking, no nothing bike is as if there is no battery in it at all? Perhaps I was not explicit enough in my opening thread?

I spoke with a contact recently made who is a retired Beamer Mechanic. He said ignition switch and that they are a bugger to replace with sacrificial bolts used and that he'd done heaps of them. Anyway he said to flick the key backwards and forwards vigorously, I did and bingo, power again!

Thanks forum and I hope this gives a little back!

Great. If that is the case, perhaps you will see a difference with a shot of Tri-Flow or similar lubricant into the lock.

The switch may work for awhile, however plan on changing at some point. It will finally give up at a really inopportune time.

It is just a small module under the keyed unit and yes, a bugger to drill two screw heads out from the bottom:banghead

Since it's a 2006 - it was under the EWS recall. If the dealership was smart (mine was on my '07 R12R - but I asked them to..) they replaced the one-time-use/sheered head bolts with normal allen/torx bolts when they did the EWS ring replacement. That makes replacement trivial. Worth a look..

Dealership is only a mile away, perhaps I'll get them to do it? I'm an ex vehicle mechanic myself of 32 years ago. do you think I would cope doing it? I have all the tools. If I get the dealership to do it at least I'll have them valuing me as a customer? I'll enquire about that.

Is there any stepthroughs or YouTube clips about the job? I saw the parts on Ebay?

Thanks so much for the guidance this forum helps me so much!

Aussie Bob.
