2005 R1200GS rear shock shield removal?

I am replacing the springs on my front and rear shocks and have run into a little problem. I was able to remove the rear shock shield and install the new spring, but broke the shield when I tried to re-install it. Is there a trick to this? I have a spare but don't want to be a goober and bust it also...This is a Non-ESA shock-
 
BMW must have redesigned this item. I was able to easily swap it with one from a 2008 GSA (old WP shock vs. newer Showa shock). Not a perfect swap, but at least I'm able to do it without damage...
