2004 R1100S Engine crash bars

I think the short answer is "no."
The longer answer is "don't crash, get some valve cover protectors (BMW makes some decent ones that aren't "too" pricey), and have fun with a great performing bike.

What ? :scratch There are several options.

I have these on my RT and think they are the best option out there in terms of actually working and decent value for the quality.

those look interesting, and aren't too large/ugly. What is their top mounting point? the rear bottom is none too sturdy, tho it is what also gets used for the BMW protectors. I suspect that in a major get-off, they won't provide any more portection than do BMW's covers.

Quite the opposite. With a three point mount using M6 X 20mm screws with two going into the front and rear of the cylider head and the bottome one going into the base of the cylinder on solid mount points I think the ZTeknic crash bars would be much more effective than plastic covers over the valve covers that grind off in ten feet of sliding. They are only useful for tip overs in your shop or on a lawn and need replacing after most roll overs. I had two sets and gave up on them. Unlike the plastic BMW ones they don`t need removing for a valve adjustment either. It`s a nice solid design and the best oilhead crash bars I`ve found so far.

Welcome to the Forum tcarven:wave

They look OK on other models, but a little odd on an S...but that's my opinion. They blend in more on a RT, and who cares how they look on a GS as they look normal.
Having an S and seeing some larger versions on one made me stick with the OEM guards. My neighbor has a Boxer Cup with the carbon OEM versions...and has had to replace a very expensive but pretty cover.

The Touratech shown here on an S here would be on my short list , but I am not the OP and not sure if he wants minimal or maximum protection.

In a major get-off, what are you really trying to prevent? Wearing through a valve cover is far cheaper than ripping those M6 mounts off the heads or breaking some mounting points on the engine case. You're crashing the bike; something is going to get damaged. Make it something cheap and sacrificial, like a valve cover or the BMW plastic parts.

Really appreciate the lead and the review, I plan to put a lot of miles on, even this winter ( tends to increase the chances of taking a slide) 'I'm too old to rely on reflexes to save me and too experienced to think I'll never go down. I think I'm going to get a set. Thanks for the help. I thought google was just for maps. Ha Ha.

Ztechnic bars
Although not as good as the big bars they did a pretty job for me.
I like them

That photo of GSAddict's tip over remind me of another thing I like about the Ztechnik bars. They also provide a larger safety zone for the rider's leg when they go over. Crash bars are not really attractive by their nature. They get added on over top of some really swanky design work and pretty much wreck the esthetics but it's a safety thing, not a bike show thing.

I try not to call them CRASH bars myself, engine protection sounds a little less negative.
And yes it happens, but always thinking about falling over and crashing sure takes some of the fun out of motorcycling. If I spent some of the time some do on talking about crashing, I would maybe stop doing it...the crashing part for sure:dunno

Some bikes and riding styles lend themselves to needing the protection...our S bikes are not on that list.If they ever go horizontal , I am not so worried about guards keeping me any safer. But, that's my take.
Our GS's do have a few scrapes on the guards...gravity often wins over style and over confidence.:banghead
