Ignition area cover?

Anyone aware if I could find a guard in the form of a sticker that would go around the ignition switch to keep my keychain from scuffing and scratching up the area between the bars? I felt like I’ve seen one on a RT on YouTube but can’t remember where. Any home remedies or fix ideas? I should probably just accept this or remove my keychain but I must use it to keep my one and only key from getting lost.

If I buy a blank key can any hardware store cut it for me?

Thanks! -Matt

Absolutely! There’s an adhesive carbon fiber kit available from Hornig. I have it on my bike and it works quite well. https://www.motorcycleparts-hornig.com/BMW-R-1100-1150-RT/Carbon-Fiber-GFK/Dash-pad.html

Here’s another option. This non carbon fiber option is available from Wunderlich who’s another BMW moto supplier. https://www.wunderlichamerica.com/BMW_R1100_R_R1100_RT_R1150_RT_Yoke_Protector

Perfect! Love this owners group. Solutions for everything. Thank you

Glad I could help!

This group has been incredibly supportive of me throughout the years in sharing their knowledge and resources. It’s nice to be able to return the favor if I can help, even in a small way.

And in answer to Question #2 - No. If it's a genuine BMW blank, it's steel, and they wont ruin their grinder on it.

Some good locksmiths actually cater to their customer needs. One year one of the BMW riders riding an Oilhead in the Iron Butt Rally lost her key and was using her spare. The Denver dealer had key blanks. I found a locksmith who used his "old" key machine to cut her a new replacement. I have had a couple of keys cut for Voni's R1100RS too.

As for the new key style with strait edges and the cut in a channel - who knows - I don't. Maybe in a big city but not around where I live, for sure.
