2002 1150 RT Speedometer Needle

Greetings,

I just did the 60K service on my 02' RT, upgraded the brake lines, and had my mechanic perform a, "servectomy." Riding the other day and the darn speedo needle broke. I have read that it's nearly impossible to remove the lens to change the needle. Is this correct? I could cover the broken needle (even though I am not type A, knowing it is broken annoys the crap out of me) and use a GPS but the broken needle will be, "laughing at me" in the back of my mind. Following are a few suggestions I would rather not follow:

Purchase a used module
Have the speedo rebuilt for a few hundred over a broken needle

Any other solutions out there, more specifically, if I remove the dash can I "fix" the needle?

Thanks!

I'm not a lot of help, but wonder, what was the force that "broke" the needle, and if a person did manage to put a new needle on it, would it just break again, or not?

I had a malfunctioning speedometer on my 02 1150RT. After much searching I could not find anyone who would service it. I would recommend you do what I did which is buy a new speedometer and install it yourself. It’s not technically difficult, but there are a fair number of bolts that you need to remove as part of the front faring needs to come off to access the gauges. I could not find anyone who would set my odometer to the correct mileage so you will be at 0 miles again (new bike!).

Since it takes some time to remove the speedo, it’s a good idea to replace the little lightbulbs that illuminate it once you are in there. They are cheap and easy to replace once you have the speedometer removed.

Thank you

Thanks for the reply. I plan to use a GPS, and enjoy the bike for some time before I open up the dash:)

Speedometer

Do not know about the 1150 but on my 1100RS the cost of a new speedometer was about 1/2 of what I expected in Beemer Land, less than $150.

I've opened a few speedos and related instruments to repair.
If you are very careful you can pry the bezel around the perimeter where it is swaged over with a dulled flat blade screwdriver.
It takes patience and time not to damage the parts.
To close takes more patience bending the bezel back.
Evidence of opening will always be there but if you are careful it will not be visible when mounted unless closely scrutinized.

I recently replaced the speedo in my 2003 R1150RT. Took about an hour or so. In my case the needle was fine but the internals were faulty (a common problem with these is the wearing of an internal bezel/mechanical bit that can't be serviced).

The cost here in Canada was pricey at ~$350CDN.
