Turn signal woes

So today several crows took off and I rode the g310r right through. At home I noticed right front turn signal was loose, still bolted on but the rubber end had popped out of the headlamp housing because of the bird strike. No problem right? Just one little bolt. Imagine my surprise when I unscrewed the bolt and heard a nut fall out. What, no speed nut? They’re all over the place! Could be easy fix, should be easy fix, looks like it will involve removing headlamp, gauge cluster, separating the Tupperware and finally get that nut.
Oh for an old fashioned service manual with disassembly instructions, photo, sequence etc.

Totally agree; the engineer who designed the G310GS' turn signals was either insane or forced into it by his penny pinching bosses. Here's my G310GS turn signal woes and solutions: I had a front and a rear turn signal pop out during my first year's trip (NC to MS Springfield BMW National Rally to NEBDR to Nova Scotia to NC), so I switched all four of the 7" long US spec turn signals to the 3" Euro spec versions also used on other US bikes. I had the front pop out twice during my second year's long trips (MABDR, PABDR-X, and TAT from NC to OR to WI), so I replaced the front bolt and nut with two cable-ties, one through the bolt hole and one around the stalk base via a small hole I drilled above and forward of the bolt hole. I just completed this year's long trip (ORBDR-X, ORBDR, Redmond BMW National Rally, WABDR, and IDBDR); during that trip, I had one front turn signal pop out and fixed it two minutes: I cut the two cable-ties; popped it back in; and re-cabled-tied it back in place. In back, to avoid problems with my Mosko Moto R80, I switched from stalk mounted turn signals to arrowhead turn signals mounted on my license plate. Link and pictures below.

As for that stupid turn signal mount nut. Get a new one at the hardware store. Then use needle nose pliers to hold the nut up in place. Or do as I did while on a trip: I just replaced the bolt with a nice wide, tight zip tie through the hole. I left it that way!!

Hi Paul,

Great minds zip-tie alike (#2 above). 😋

Thanks everyone, I did a zip tie right after the nutfall incident. So after 2 years and 15000 miles “Betty” joins the long list of contraptions that made it home with the help of a piece of wire, or zip tie. My guess is all the pretty plastic is made to come apart in a certain sequence and once you’ve got it figured out it’s not so bad. Or a zip tie and done.

When I discussed this with my service manager he said the the R1250RT is much worse.
