rebuild steering damper?

can the steering damper on an 83 R80RT be rebuilt? Mine is leaking and seems to have no damping effect, even at the "3" setting. Do the come apart, and if so how?
Are they still available new?

My 85 R80RT does not have one. I've always been kind of interested in retrofitting one to the 85. Does it make that much difference? And would I be able to fit it in? I don't even have an idea of where it mounts so your input is appreciated.

i ran an RS for awhile without it, as the ball socket on one end had failed. With properly adjusted head bearings, I did not even miss it.
A lot of bikes came without it, and apparently had no issues.
