R90 engine emblem glue?

MARTYH

New member
While at the Lima rally, the emblem fell off my R90. Has anyone found a glue that is good for holding this emplem in place??
Thanks,
Marty

Marty - I have the same problem with my R100S. Another forum member suggested 3M emblem/badge tape...however, I just got back from the rally and haven't picked up any yet.

Be careful with engine emblems as they are one of a very few items NLA from BMW. "Preventive" maintenance may be in order.

Thank goodness for Ebay! :clap

I'm suffering the same dilema and here's what I found. I read the same thread and somehow thought " 3M Emblem adhesive" I went to my local auto body shop and as luck would have it, the 3M rep walked in while I was there. He had no info, nor does the website, as to the heat resistance properties of the adhesive. He did offer that the adhesive sets up hard, but reasoned without a sharp blow, it should stay in place.
I didn't ask, but I think the tape may not work out. I'm sure the adhesive would be fine, but question whether the rubber backing would. Maybe fine I don't know. I intend to re-attach my /5 emblems tomorrow, if you want to wait, I'll post results.

badge adhesive

This past winter had my bike updated with some eelctrical components as Omega diode board, SS volt reg etc, well in the process decided to do a thorough engine case cleaning wnd while in the process thought it best to try and preserve the all too precious R90/S ebmlems on the stater cover. Tried a few different adhesives - all $$ down the drain. Finally went to "Super Epoxy" , this one from PC products. Has held like iron. Just clean thoroughly the area and a good final wipe with alcohol is recommended as well. Tese emblems will NOT come off. Other product I used as black vinyl adhesive was able to be pulled off with almost no effort, like peeling a banana. Good Luck..

I looked at PC Products' Super Epoxy...package says not to expose cured epoxy to temps > 200 deg. F. I decided to use JB Weld. Supposed to hold to 600 deg. F.

I had my R 75 emblem come off and I used a generic 2 part epoxy.Seems to have held up fine.

Went ahead and affixed the emblew with JB Weld. After the curing period, rode for a couple hundred miles in 90+ degree heat. It seems well stuck. Time will tell.

Emblem Glue

Well time to eat crow or "super epoxy" if necessary. Have just noticed that the right side starter cover emblem is loosening its grip at the back portion of the eblem. Do not know if the glue is failing intrinsically or if the glue is failing due to my application/cleaning process. The left side seems strong. Will attempt another "super Epoxy " application, if doesn't work then J B Weld will be next I guess. Thought you should know this d ue to my post above.

Permanent VS removable ?

Epoxy is great, if you don't expect to remove it in your lifetime (or destroy the emblem). There are lots of low, up through high, temp RTVs (silicone adhesives) that I use. Great adhesion, easily removed with patience & a soft knife. Season to taste... <<<)))

All epoxies can be debonded with heat- how much depends on the particular formulation. Choose accordingly. Also the longer the cure-time, the less brittle the epoxy will be when cured (less brittle = more resistant to vibration). I've heard nothing but good about 3M Weatherstrip adhesive but have not tried it myself, as my R100R does not have glued-on engine badges- just the letters BMW cast into the starter cover.

Another vote for JB Weld. I had the same issue with an engine badge for my ÔÇÖ71 R75/5.

Be sure to scour the back of the emblem and thoroughly clean the engine surface (I used brake cleaner, carb cleaner should do the same trick) to insure a solid bond. I have about 1k miles on mine, and it is *solid*. Yeah, the only way this baby will come off is to heat it +600?? or grind it off.

ALL good feedback

I could not find the JB so I used Paste Eposy. About 1000 miles, some 90deg days and no problem yet. I did clean the block with carb cleaner and ground the back of the emblem to shinny metal.

If you want JB Weld, I can send some out. Their factory is about an hour up I-30 from here so all the auto stores around here carry it.
