R80ST Oil Pan

Any R80ST owners here? I am wondering if the ST had a bash plate on it or not. The MaxBMW and RealOEM fiche their part drawing for both oilpans (ST and G/S) show a bash plate and the oil pan has mounting holes for that bash pan but photos of the ST do not show a bash plate.

The part numbers are different; the drawing is identical. Maybe BMW is just lazy and does not show drawings of the correct parts for a given bike if it is just "close enough" to the other model?

The part numbers are different because the parts are different! The ST doesn'thave the mounnntng holes for the bash platte.
 
You're going to run offroad I suggest getting one . 21" wheel + forks . GS in fuction not appearance. Are the parts would be essential? I'm asking because I don't know it's not a trick question I already have ST although I never ride it off off road maybe a better rear shock would be a good idea as well....

most other pieces I believe are just for collectors to show they have a valuable bike

The MAX BMW fiche shows a pic of the pan. It's the deep one; does not accept a bash plate. Totally different design.

Thanks Anton. This is really confusing. I am looking at both the RealOEM and MaxBMW fiches right now and they both show this drawing of the R80ST oil pan. On closer inspection, the part itself has some photos I did not notice initially and they show exactly what this guy is selling. Deeper pan, a spacer that he is not sure fits are on offer.
They re-used the R80G/S parts drawing which makes it confusing. This is off the ST fiche.

Another point of confusion is the oil pump assembly does not show the spacer or extender for the pump pickup that the ST uses for the deeper pan.

I was thinking it might be an improvement for my 81 G/S but the bash plate is nice to have as a just in case. I don't do a lot of off road riding with it normally.
 
MAX has a photo of the actual part which makes it all clear. It's only confusing if you think the illustration is accurate because they re-use them all the time. The only significant item in a parts diagram is the part number.

If you want a better oil pan that takes a bash plate, consider the '91-on GS one. In fact, any time you are looking for a better part, look at the very latest models because they got all of the best parts.
 
BMW parts fiche diagrams are NOT assembly or orientation drawings, they exist only to demonstrate the parts that BMW has available for sale now. There are many instances of diagrams that get re-used, but the part reference numbers (on the diagram) for non-applicable parts are grayed out and those part numbers do not appear in the accompanying part number lists. And yes, it can be confusing! :)

For yet more fun, browse the Euro model diagrams and you’ll spot more things, like on some models authority bits that never made it to the USA.

At least the still include in the diagrams parts that are NLA, so one can at least find part numbers for reference.

The ST didn't come from the factory with a skid plate but it's a good addition for any off highway riding. I ended up cracking my original with a rock when I was riding down a riverbed. Regarding changes for off highway, I wouldn't change a thing. The gearing is perfect, bike is light, handling is great, and suspension sufficient. Just let a few lbs of air out of the tires and ride it.

In 1991 Voni and I rode to and from Alaska. She was riding a 1983 R80ST. I was riding a 1981 R80G/S Paris Dakar. In preparation for the trip we rode on some muddy roads and it became apparent that the very low fender on the ST would easily pack up with mud. I didn't install a "high" fender but did raise the low fender about 2 inches using drilled metal bars. This allowed any trapped mud to be dug out with a screwdriver/mud mover. The photo in post #9 shows just how snug the fender is to the tire in OEM configuration.
 
Thanks for the education everyone. I'm going to pass on this idea as there is minimal benefit to changing my G/S pan for the ST one. And it seems there is not any real benefit to the extra oil in this case anyway.
