Does anyone have any expierience with a radio for a 2003 RT? BMW's radio seems like such a rip off! What type of installations have BMWMOA's folks done on there own ? Any suggestions will be appriciated

Diesel,

I recently purchased an 2004 RT and looked at the radio option. When the radio, antenna, wiring, speakers, etc... were added up it was well over $1100. That did NOT include labor. I asked a few folks about the radio itself and I was told it sucked.

I decided to skip it and get a J&M intercom system, Sony MP3 player and a Sony walkman radio. All small and work like champ for under $600 including install. My only complaint is the radio reception sucks at times but I just change over to MP3.

Radio??

My dealer told me to just buy a walkman or MP3 and not to deal with the hassle of the beemer radio. I think that $1100,= for a bike radio is a rip off and the quality is questionable on top of that too!?! :banghead. Great!!:rolleyes
Anywhoo it is also another thing that will eventually break and IMHO another distraction of the riding experience, since we all have to drive for all the other road users (usurpers?) out there; 1/2 of which don't even know they are in a car.:snore
Oh well just my 2cts

It's a long ugly story, but my 02 came with the radio kit (bracket, wiring, speakers, antenna, but no radio or remote). I spent the bucks for the radio and remote and no-worky. I replaced the radio for a functional one, and was completely underwhelmed with the results. Besides, what's up with cassette only??

I returned the radio and remote and proceeded to remove all the guts of the radio system. Speakers, bracket, wiring, and antenna are in a box on a shelf in my garage. Maybe the next owner will want to fiddle with it.

I ride radio-free. The music of the wind and the boxer below is enough for me.

Just my opinion, of course.

Radio?

I've never had the desire to put a radio on a bike. No desire for CB, bike to bike or even intercom. I did have one set of bike to bike that I got cheap. I used them on one trip with a friend and shut them off. When I got home I chucked them. I'd rather be alone in my thoughts. Come to think of it I didn't keep the friend, either.

I'm sure having most of the stuff installed, like the 2002 RT, would be tempting but after reading these few posts I'll easily resist the temptation.

Different strokes I guess. I use the intercom because I ride two up a lot. I find it much more relaxing to listen to classical music while riding down the road clearing my mind out.

Any progress Diesel?

I put the radio out of my 91 K100LT into my 04 R1150RT. I got all of the other stuff needed for the radio from a 02 RT. I'd much rather listen to a radio then to any recorded music on an MP3 or casette, etc. MP3's don't give traffic and weather reports.

I am on the radio free side of this one. Just the ying and the yang of the wind.

Years ago I rented a bike for a week that had a radio. I didn't like that when something came on that I didn't want to hear I was focused on fiddling with the radio rather than paying attention. That one week with a radio was enough to know that radios are not for me. With earplugs in place, and visor down, I am one with the road.

Radio?

Sony XM. The only way to go. If you need to go there at all.

I use it about 20% of the time. Transfer the hardware to my other vehicles or home in an actual "snap".

How did you mount the receiver on the bike and what power source do you use? I have been looking at that option because of the ability to put it in the truck as well.

Mounting

I have the Sony set up. It has a cup that is "permanently" affixed to the clutch master cylinder res. The antenna is also affixed (with velcro as well) to the front break m/c res. The power is hard wired to the battery with an in-line fuse.

The radio clicks into the cup. I have cups and antennae in the truck and house, and an antenna and 12vpower cord and extra cup in a bag for travelling in others' vehicles.

When I traded the KGT yesterday, I pulled the "permanent" install off in five minutes and will install it on the new R-RS when it arrives in about 10 days,

That install will take about 10 minutes.

Best $10 a month that I spend. By far.
