Hi all,
I just installed the lowers on my recently-restored 1980 R100RS. I'd been running it without the lowers until my first oil / filter change.
I have an issue I can't quite seem to get my head around. The lower mounting bracket attaches at two points: the threaded inserts on the fairing end, and the other end to the front engine mount.
What I can't figure out is how to torque the engine mount nut to 52 ft-lbs (recommended spec), without the mounting bracket turning as I tighten the nut. Right now I have it tight, but not quite to spec, and as I tighten, the bracket starts to rotate, which of course it must not do, as it is attached to the fiberglass fairing at the other end, and the twisting will crack / break the mounting points.
So to others who occasionally remove their fairing lowers (summer weather, oil changes, exhaust work etc), then re-mount them, how do you address this issue? I must be missing something obvious, but I figured I'd ask the experts here. I posted also on the airheads email list but it's been very quiet lately, I guess a lot of folks have moved to facebook, which I don't have.
Thanks in advance,
