Ortlieb dry saddle bags

I'm thinking about purchasing the ortlieb dry saddle bags and am wondering if a rack required for these bags? If so, does it matter what kind of rack I use?

Thanks for the help!

Saddle bags and racks

Posted this in Thumpers but probably needs to be here:

To use the Ortlieb dry saddle bags do you need to use a rack? I'm curious if they need a rack to keep them safely away from the exhaust of my 2009 g650gs and also to keep them secure.

If so, does anyone have a recommendation for a rack that isn't too costly but will do the job - and perhaps be usable for other types of luggage?

My wife had a pair of Ortliebs on her FZ-6 for years. That bike has an under-seat exhaust, and there were a few issues with attaching the rear strap in a way that kept it from melting. When I see her this evening I'll ask for specifics. I know people who've attached them to V-Stroms, right up against the exhaust heat shield without mounting brackets, with a little cosmetic scuffing as a result but nothing more. The side of the bag that faces the bike has an insulating panel, so I believe the straps are more of a concern than the bag itself.

Unfortunately, as far as your question is concerned, we never put the Ortliebs on my F650, so I can't say "Yes, I've done it, it's cool." I think you could get away with it if you mounted them far enough forward, and just unslung the Ortliebs when you stopped for gas. That's very hypothetical, though.

I have the bags on my 2007 GS. Yes, you will probably need racks, or the bags will lay directly on the exhaust. I got the Moto-Sport racks for mine. I got the racks and the Universal Mounting Kit.

Haven't tried mounting anything else to them, but I think it can be done.

I re-worked the mounting screws on mine, so I can just undo the wing nuts and take the bags off quickly.

After the pic was taken I cut down the length of the bolts. They no long stick out from the wing nut

You might also want to look at the Hepco Becker racks:

I have a set of HB racks on my Honda Rebel and my Moto Guzzi Breva, and have put the bags from the GS (with the Moto Sport Universal Mounting Hardware) on both of the bikes. Appears that the tubing size for both the racks are the same diameter. Only difference is, on the HB racks, there are no mounting bolts at the top of the rack, so you would need to use the Velcro straps to secure the top part.

It also depends upon the bike. I've a set of the skinny bags that I use on my R69S. No rack required on that bike.

Wow that is an awesome bike! I do like those skinny bags. Was thinking about giving them a try instead of the bigger saddle bags.
