Ohlins? Wilbers? or WP?

It's Xmas time, I think a set of new shocks for my R1150RS would fit in my stocking...
Anyone have preference between Ohlins, Wilbers or WP's?? :D

Just to muddy the water, I have installed a set of Fox Shocks on my roadster, and I am very happy with the difference they made.

Sold the Ohlins on our RS a while back.

:banghead

I'm looking for another pair. Have Ohlins on my S and on my VFR.

I have ohlins on my GS and had them on an RT that I used to own. I won't leave home without them:p I haven't experienced the other brands you mentioned so I can't suppy a comparison.

I'm a Wilburs kinda guy. Heard to many war stories about WP,wanted to be different than an Ohlins Rider,in fact I think the quality is a tad better than Ohlins,Fox was popular with the dirt bike crowd years ago. Ohlins were a couple of bucks cheaper than Wilbur at the time I purchased a year ago. Since the summer,Wilburs have gone up in $$$. Got a new Ohlins that came on a used airhead GS I purchased this summer, running the Wilburs on the '02 RT. Both are great!
But mostly in my opinion, any good after market .shock will make a "Big" difference in the "Bike Handling". Best money spent!!!

shortened/lowered?

Sooooooo...... wha-da-ya-think,
stock shock height, or lowered?

I'm an aggressive rider (so he thinks :brow ) and been riding that way for over 30 years now. I'm also a bit on the.... heavy side, and I'm really really short (5' 2").

To add to the above equation, I'm no longer a 'spring chicken', I'll be 50 this summer. So it's becoming increasingly more difficult to climb off of & onto the bike.

What infinite wisdom does anyone have to offer regarding my considering lower shocks to replace my second set of shocks (in 42,000 miles) on my '02 R1150R?

Will I regret it, or shall I just continue to "deal with it" like I've been doing for my entire bike riding career?

Hi ya Dave! My hello to the Mrs too!

Trying to branch out a bit..... Scott suggested I visit y'all.

I'm running outa money, but I gotta put new tires on the bike and I really should replace those old shocks.

So far the red springs on a set of Works appeals to me; they'ed look good on a midnight Black!

But I still go back & forth on this issue regarding shorter shocks..... I still wanna drive like a fool, and have a perfect suspension under me; but it'd be nice to reach the ground from the comfort of my seat......

Re: shortened/lowered?

Hi Patrick :wave

Patrick,

You just gotta get something rebuildable for that R. You ride it too much to do anything less. As to any specifics, you'll have to hope someone else has a brilliant thought or two. :D

But let's narrow it down for you a bit....

Which of the quality shocks offer fine tuning of the shock length so that Pat might nudge his R a wee bit closer to the ground? I thought Wilburs offered this - but at a premium.

:jester
Back at ya guys! Wow, kinda makes a guy feel....... warm & fuzzy, all these waving hand icons & such.

"Wilbers"
What's the story with 'em? First I heard of Wilbers was from a nice gal who said she was gonna git some for her 'K' Bike someday. If I'm not mistaken, she mentioned them because they were available in shortened lengths.

My next question would be, WHO on the West Coast could hook me up with the right kind of tweeking of my new suspension. I want rebuildables designed to support the weight of an 'RT'..... on a Roadster's frame.

I plan to do a track day with a top-pack full of cigars & clean underware, full-fairing with entertainment center, and System Cases with a selection of imported beer......... and I'm gonna need a suspension that's up to it!

I saw some Bitubos the other day that were pretty nicely made. They had high and low speed compression damping adjustment too, along with a seperate reservoir for the front shock.

They're on my short list.

DUDE!

Truth of the matter is, you just want that fancy case that the Bitubo's come in.......

isn't it?

Now THEMS some sexy shocks! With INFINITE adjustments!

(Hell, I'm trying to decide which Visa card to put the tires on, let alone financing suspension....)

Hijacking briefly: anybody on the west coast sell these new Metzler 6's?

the Fox Shocks I have on my Roadster (96) have really nice red springs. the rear shock is adjustable for height, not using the preload, but with a separate connection on the bottom. I think the adjustment is about an inch or so. I like the ride, they make the bike stick better and the wallowing at high speeds in the corners is gone. I didnt get the fancy models with external resivoirs, or hydraulic compression. They are a definate improvement over the stock shocks, are rebuildable and and can be purchased to your weight and type of riding. I seem to be the only one on the site that has them, but I will give them a thumbs up.

Where can we buy these Ohlins and Wilbers?

Pat

I've bought Ohlins from Wolf BMW in Canada. Good pricing and nice folks.

I know John Borella of Borella Restorations sells Wilbers

Convert Showas?

I was once sent the information of an outfit who rebuilds/converts our stock Showa shocks to gas. You can get new springs from them, etc.

I now have TWO SETS of stock shocks for my Roadster, rather than throw them out..... may as well rebuild 'em & sell 'em.

Does anybody know who these guys are that convert our Showas to gas?

There is a company in Canada, who rebuilds stock BMW shocks. I will try to find the web site again, it seems to me he also added heavier duty internals and I believe he could upgrade your springs as well. here is the link, it is to bruno's. I have not used them, but they offer the service.

thank you, Thank You, THANKYOU!

I'll be contacting Bruno's, sending them a pair of shocks, replacing my current shocks with the rebuilt Bruno's, then send those in.... The second set has progressive springs from HyperPro Racing Spring Technology ("Purple Perfection")..... they may end of for sale someday, freshly rebuilt!

Thanks again.

Wilbers anyone??

Are there anyone using Wilbers shocks on their oilhead?

Supposely they all could come with adjustable ride height +/- 1/2 inch. both front and rear shock. high/low speed seperate damping adjustments are available as options on rear shock, that's something that no one else offers.

I would love to play around with that ride height adjustment on my bike.

Anyone???
:dunno :dunno :dunno

WOW!

The Wilbers offer ALL THAT? You have MY curiosity now too; wish I was made-o-money.....

(Damn, but that icon makes it difficult to read the content of your thread!) ;)
