New BMW Connected Ride Navigator

Looks like it's an Android Auto device? If so, why not just mount your phone up there using one of the adapters? Is there some other functionality beyond what the phone can do?
It is android auto or apple carplay. Not sure what operating system it uses. It has full integration with the wonderwheel. Can pull data from the canbus to display. Does not require any adapter to fit in the cradle.

This is an update/new post. I purchased a Sena SRL-EXT to go with my new BMW Connected Ride Navigator. I have exchanged more than 25 email messages with Sena "support". The reply the send suggest they don't even read my email. The problem is that even when I have followed all their configuration advice I have a couple problems. First the navigation directions fade in and out when I also have engaged mesh mode for communications. Also the iPhone which is paired to the ConenctedRide Navigator sounds much worse through the Sena than it does to almost any other bluetooth connected system including my car which has a pretty poor sound system :)

Sena is apparently unable to help. My local dealership is very nice but not expert in this. They have spoken to their distributor and they have offered to exchange the Sena for me. My worry is that their is either a fundamental problem with the Sena SRL-EXT and the new BMW ConnectedRide Navigator (this has nothing to do with the Connected Ride app), or they have not figured out how this all works together.

Does anyone know anybody at BMW and/or Sena to speak with?

Does anyone know if installing a SIM card is better than using phone as WIFI? And if SIM card, how to decide which SIM card to use?

SIM card would be better than WiFi via phone.
1) Better throughput/lag
2) Simpler.
3) Doesn't drain the phone battery (the extra processing/signal usage will quickly use up any battery if not on a charger)

Which SIM: Look for "data only" plans, check reviews, etc. If it will/can use a normal phone SIM, check out Mint Mobile (referral link) - the link lets you get 3 months at the annual plan rate. The base plan (5GB) is probably enough, unless you are also streaming music, then the 15GB plan might be the better option (you can also add data for reasonable fees if you go over. But going over doesn't cut you off, it just slows down.)
