New Airhead

Wish list

Okay, now that the "Man Cave" has been completed, my /7 is up on the block and it is soon approaching the time where the teardown starts.
Off the top of my head, and a few walkarounds, I see these big ticket items I will soon be in the market for:
- Completely new SS exhaust system, with the 4 exhaust protectors for this model.
- New or refurbished handlebar controls for both sides.
- New front shock boots.
- New/refurbished chrome mirrors.
- New locking gas cap (the old one is broken).
Most of the other items (at least those that can be seen!) are probably restorable to decent shape: I am not a full restore guy: I am hoping to get her purring and cleaned up, but leave the character on her.
Just starting to read the airhead Newsletter, and there are some great resources here in the SOCAL area, but if anyone has some words of wisdom as to where to get those items, let me know!
In the meantime, I am organizing my tools, and thinking of the tear down process. I got a lot of shelves ready, and my digital camera at the ready! Hope to start in the next week or so.

So, what is up with that air-tube connection from the air-box?!?! Is it a) the tube is on the wrong side? b) it's upside down c) the carb-to-head connector has been shortened for some perceived "performance" reason? d) it's just partially disconnected? e) other.

What's the other side look like? Getting those air tubes on can be quite a wrangle the first time someone does it; a combination of having all the clamps loose enough to allow everything to slip together. And with the two tubes being different in length and angle it can be a bit confusing.

I'm not a statistician so what is the number of different combinations; 2 tubes, 2 lengths, 2 angles, each tube has an "up" and a "down"?
Okay, the deal with the tube connections is that the intake side of the flat CV carbs I have are a smaller diameter..check out the pictures. Maybe I have to get new air tubes? The list of parts is starting to populate: will post my total pictures on shutterfly, since they are too big to put on this forum.
How does anyone get more than one tiny pic posted? I am working on an iMac, and I must admit, compressing pictures is harder than on a windows machine...

Can't change the angles, but you can change the sides and the upside down/down side up..

..and I dare say that your oil pressure switch is rigged with a low-oil-pressure-kill switch. That's not factory. For a 78 R100/7, the stock part is 61311243414 and looks like:

It's bad enough when a new guy to the "good" bikes comes on and just HAS to run his mouth about anything to build up his thread count and therefore credibility. Such as an R bike wont make it up a pass in Colorado above 40MPH; but hasnt riden an R bike further than 100 miles from his home in Arizona and then brags about taking his 2 bikes to the national on a flat bed and calls himself a RIDER...........

It's bad enough when a new guy to the "good" bikes comes on and just HAS to run his mouth about anything to build up his thread count and therefore credibility. Such as an R bike wont make it up a pass in Colorado above 40MPH; but hasnt riden an R bike further than 100 miles from his home in Arizona and then brags about taking his 2 bikes to the national on a flat bed and calls himself a RIDER...........

I think that sensor is the switch, yes? I'm looking for the sensor that actually gives the pressure reading for that sport fairing on the bike. It's got a pressure gauge.

Okay, carbs are off, part and gasket numbers are starting to accumulate, and one main issue I'm thinking of now is the red crap that's in the tank. the old gas I threw out was pink in color, and I'm wondering what the old owner might have done to it, and whether it's worth a trip to get it cleaned and lined. It does not leak, but there is quite a bit of red residue inside.
 
Finally tried the little r instead of the big R and got in. Thanks DD. Looks like a lot of work, but it will be nice when done. Just take your time and it will reward you.

The red residue is the lining! If you want to replace it, the old can be removed by soaking it in vinegar for a few days/weeks. Then replace it with the lining of your choice. It's interesting how the lining can stand up (mostly) to 30+ years of leaded, unleaded, alcohol-infused and whatnot in gasoline, but a few days of vinegar will peel it right off. Think about that next time you have a salad!

Hmmm. Does the /5 series use a copper crush washer for the oil pressure switch? I thought this was (self-sealing) pipe thread.

That picture is of a ~78 R100/7 switch, PN 61311243414. My 1974 /6's use PN 61311243414 (same). These include the copper washer.

The /5 uses PN 61311351799;

Looks pretty dang similar, but there is no mention of a copper washer in the pic or part description.

Pulled the choke apart, took pics of the master cylinder, took off the mirrors (Napoleon brand from Japan), and got the oil filter, cover, etc, as well as the gas cap documented on the website.
Pursuing a local source for a carb rebuild while I keep plinking away at the guts of my machine. Carbs are the Bing CV, flat top (seems rare), 64/32/223 &224. I am going to try that vinegar option for the tank: if that fails, my neighbor and I are discussing the tumbler/drywall screw treatment...seems a bit loud and long, but i bet that sure would eliminate all the material inside that tank!

Master cylinder definitely needs either replacing or full rebuild: SS lines? Guess I should order them now if I really want em...

Well, it sure is nice to have a project in garage, finally. I think these pictures are gonna come in handy in a few weeks!
 
The red stuff in the tank is the original liner. I'm surprised no one's mentioned POR15 yet for resealing the tank.

I used the nuts/washers sloshing method in the tank for my DS100, and it removed a lot of rust and crud. Did it remove all of it? I don't know.

Many carb rebuild kits don't come with floats or diaphragms, so keep that in mind.

Covers are off

Tonite, the top engine cover, and the front cover are off. Waiting for the Kroil to show up in the mail to start loosening the heads up, although they're soaking in WD-40 now...Bought my first slew of parts/gaskets from BMW San Diego, going to try metal etch tomorrow on the covers; a kitchen cleaner that the airhead on the staff there at SD BMW says works great...

Tear down continues

Bought some phosphoric acid, and 3m pads today, and have pulled the back pegs, the front brake cylinder, the front fender, and cut off the old torn boots from the shocks. Taking a break this weekend, thanks for all the advice guys: will continue next week. As usual, pics are up on shutterfly:

Heads, jugs, footpegs, exhaust are off

No password needed....
After sitting all weekend with a liberal application of kroil everywhere, the heads/jugs/exhaust all came off with no problem. Kroil is a MUST: worked great, and all the rusted parts on the bike are dark and lubricated..
Now is time to send the heads off to the shop: one exhaust valve on the left side is cracked.
Farrah seems happy with the progress so far...

Carbon build up

How does this one look? I have sprayed them with kroil, figured I would just clean them up a bit and re-install once the cleaning is done...
