Navigator VI (Nav-VI)...Tips and Tricks

Navigator IV doesnt recognize United States

After an update recently, when choosing an address, it shows Baja California, Mexico. When change state or country is chosen, the change Country, "no matches found" is received if USA, United States, United States of America is spelled. I have re-loaded the maps but results are the same. Anyone have this problem. Suggestions. While in British Columbia last week, it would not allow search of addresses in United States.

I'm not familiar with the Nav IV, but I think that though you have the correct maps loaded , they may not be active. On newer Garmins, active maps are selected in Settings 》Map & Vehicle》MyMaps. Try looking for something similar on your Nav.

Power-On Darkness

I thought that I would jump onto this thread with my question. Begging for forgiveness in advance for my laziness in the search department:

I have a NAV VI which I purchased a couple of months ago for my R1250RS, also purchased a couple of months ago. I've only used the NAV a handful of times mainly because I've only ridden the bike a handful of times (no lie - three months and still only 540 miles). When I dock the NAV and power on the master switch, the NAV is supposed to come alive, is it not? It is receiving power via the dock, correct? Well, the other day, I decided to go for one of my monthly rides (the dewpoint temp was "only" 70) and the NAV would not power up. I rode 7 or 8 miles, pulled over, undocked the NAV, and tried pressing the power button on the back of the unit. No joy. Still darkness. No big deal; I'm only riding in my local area. But sort of frustrating, nonetheless. After about a half hour, I pulled into a parking lot and thought that I would shut the bike down including turning off the master. To my surprise, as soon as I hit the kill switch, the NAV unit came alive. In other words, I never touched the master switch (button). I merely restarted the engine and off I went with the NAV working fine.

Should I be putting the NAV unit on the charger if I do not use it for a couple of weeks? I did not believe that charging it was necessary since it receives power from the dock. Anyway, I'm still very new at this. So thanks in advance.

If the device is not connected to power and also not completely shut off, the power drains over time to the point where it is completely dead until you plug it back in. If the battery is completely drained, it will take a bit to charge the unit enough to power it up, even if it is connected to the USB port.

So, advice would be to power the unit down entirely, if you don't use it for a while.

If the unit is not going to be used for a week or more you need to power it completely OFF. That requires removing the Nav from it’s cradle, canceling the shutdown message that appears on the screen, then pressing and holding the power button until the “real” shutdown screen appears. And don’t put it back into the cradle right away, as the cradle stays powered up for a time after the bike is turned off, and your Nav will power itself back on.

The “shutdown” screen that you see when the bike is turned off doesn’t really power off the Nav, it just drops it into a sleep mode that will, over time, run the battery dead. If that happens, the next time you power on the bike the Nav will not come to life until the battery charges sufficiently. And running the Nav battery dead is hard on the battery.

Best,
DeVern

Ahhh. Thank you SO much, DeVern! I appreciate the info. As always.
