My long term project 1996 R1100 RT

Dadrider

Still a learning newbie !
It is time I stop riding other's threads and start my own. I have done oil changes and such,to date on the RT, I am going to do a proper maintenance on her this summer, Going to use this thread to ask my questions.

I appreciate Mister's Rodger04, awagnon,Addict,Cele0001 and Mr Wanderer over the last yr or so to answer my questions.

I am going to use the 6 page check list for the 1150 that awagnon made up.

On awagon's suggestion, I did some searching and located Ted, and his video on the R1100RT Spline lube and reassembly. We had a short email conversation, It was good to speak with him and how he is doing. DVD is on the way.
The bike is 19 yr old with 43k miles.

Here is my list of things to do this summer while she is apart.
Pull the shocks for a freshen up and new rear spring.
Spline inspection and lube.
Check seals on crankshaft, front of trans and final drive for signs of leaking and repair if needed.
Inspect paralever pivot pins and lube. Saddleman sold me a socket and allen wrench.
Inspect Starter and lube bendix.
Replace the brake hoses with the Spegliers I have, and flush .
Inspect and change the left side Cam chain tensioner which I have.
Change the Alternator belt and tension.
Check the HES and wiring.
Clean the Throttle body's (Check and change the BBS o rings) Check for shaft to body wear.
Send injectors out for a cleaning and flowing.
Service side stand.
Service Center stand.
Change fuel hoses and clamps in tank, replace strainer, Relocate filter to safe place externally.
Replace all external fuel hoses / clamps and add QD's back in.
Change oil and air filters.
Change oil, trans oil and FD oil.
Set valves, change plugs.
Sync the TBs when back running .

Add a Aux horn I have, and Add in a Aux fuse block I have.

The clutch and throttle cables. Is a simple inspect for frays / lube sufficient? Or change out due to time?
Plug wires?

What have I missed?

Dadrider.

Not a Hijack.....just very interested

If the HES wiring has not been upgraded, now is the time. How do I know......read on. I too have a 96' R1100RT, 51K on the clock. Love everything about the bike, comfort, handling, light weight, etc., etc., etc. Just this week I had a ride to the Blue Ridge abruptly ended by what I suspect is HES wire failure. From my research so far, I gather that do to age, heat cycles, and inadequate OEM wires, this failure was inevitable. The bike still runs perfect.....when she runs. I get bout 50 miles down the road and she starts shutting off. I guess I'm lucky in that she will re-start, and I can limp home. I'm not finished researching the fix, but hope to have it sorted by next weekend.

Last spring I had many of the upgrades & PM's that you are planning done to my bike. Speigler brake lines, new HyperPro shocks, 30K service etc. The new shocks really improved the ride and handling. The whole bike is just smoother.

Like I said, I'm not done researching the HES issue, but if anyone out there knows of a source for a re-wired HES, please respond:help. A new one is $240.

Dadrider, thanks for starting this thread. Keep us updated.

I have rewired many over the years, including for BMW shops.
I use aircraft grade teflon shielded cable.
Each rewired unit is tested on a rotating tester.
You mail to me and I turn them around in 1-2 days.
Cost is $86usd return postage included
Paypal accepted.
If interested PM me.

Note : I am away until July 1 but if you mail the week before it will be here when In get back.
Alternatively you can mail to me in winter when the snow flies.

Windshield lift motor gearbox

Anyone added a coating of grease to their windshield drive / driven gears? What did you use?

Lubriplate, the stuff in the plastic tube. It's a white grease about the consistency of room temperature margarine and it sheds water. I can't remember the part number and I can't remember to order more.

I used Lubriplate around aircraft and GSE, 20 something years ago. Forgot about that. I'll find some, Thanks DY !

Throttle cable question

For the windshield gearbox gears I picked up Lucas Red N Tacky NLGI rated GC-LB grease. It is rated for sliding surfaces, is a lithium blend.

And thanks to a good search for Bowden cable I found a part number for the non bowden box cable, I plan to change both the throttle and choke cable just due to time in place and keep the originals for spares.
