Username, I've never heard of some of those but of the ones with which I am familiar, you have great taste. BTW Strange Brew is out on DVD now (got my copy!)

i'm a netflix worshipper, err, customer. if you dont have it, get it, and check out some of the ones you havent heard of. a lot of them are more "films" than "movies" and have plots and good acting and that sort of thing. i also really like dopey films with explosions, great special effects, and all that. but these are movies that i think were great. i define a good movie as one where i forget i'm watching a movie, and a great movie is a good one that causes me to think really hard about something, evokes a strong emotional response (i dont cry, but i get dust in my eye sometimes) or i want to see over and over.

one i left off was office space. i was rushed to put cover sheets on my TPS reports, so i forgot to list it!

cliffy - you had excellent picks as well. i'm going to need to check some of those out! ;)

The last time we went to the theater was to see Passion of The Christ. Very good film with an extremly well behaved audiance.

I can't remember how long it's been before that, I only know that the people in the shows around here will converse on the cell phone and with each other during the show at a high enough volume level to be heard above the movie. and thry will not stop. So, after the 4th cell call the man received I just went to the off-duty cop who worked security there and told him there was a man with something in his hand that might be an auto-feed pistol and he was waving it around. End of problem.

The cop received a round of applause when he took the guy outside! We just rent DVD's now and don't bother with the walk-ins.

That wasen't my TOP 10, just 10 of my favorites.

i go to movies and experience similar frustrations as you and the princes do. for purposes of this post, consider me a devout christian who wakes up every day trying to embody the spirit of christian teachings in my every day activities.

next time someone bugs you at the movie:

1. try to love thy neighbor. you must learn to forgive those trespasses against you, my friend. would jesus run and lie to the security guard, or would he have a kind word for the man using the phone? try showing this man some love and compassion, and see if he can take his calls outside the theater, or turn off his telephone.

2. do not bear false witness! that's a big sin! if the guy is talking on the phone, and disturbing you, i think it is wrong to tell the security folks that you think he might have a gun! if you can't do #1 above, at the very least you must be truthful when speaking to the authorities.

thanks!

Mike - your list is great! I will list 10 that I really like, in no particular order:

- Apocalypse Now
- Exposed (dir. James Toback, 1983)
- Lonely Are The Brave (Kirk Douglas)
- Face to Face (dir. Ingmar Bergman)
- Office Space
- Hamlet (The Olivier Version - not Mel Gibson's!)
- Crash (dir. David Cronenberg 1996)
- Last Tango in Paris
- Kolya (dir. Jan Sverak (Czeck), 1996)
- Giant (James Dean)

Several of you have mentioned Office Space--I agree: a poignant, insightful, and dopey comedy. The opening scene on the freeway IS southern calfornia living.

The Italian Job? Cool scenes with crashing 1150RTs in a 12 foot-sewer pipe; that's got to be worth something.

shreck
mister roberts
cool hand luke
national lampoons christmas vacation
monty python's life of brian. (an easter classic)

I am still looking for a copy of the book "The Every Man and Woman's Guide to the Undead" and a Red Swingline to replace the Bostich.

Movies

I'm stunned that the only John Wayne movie mentioned is what is considered by most JW fans to be one of his "weaker" films ; "The Green Berets" In no order.. this is just a list of the movies that find their way into my DVD player over and over and over...

Lawrence of Arabia (saw a restored 70mm digital print at the Cinedome in Hollywood)

McLintock
Big Jake
The Shootist
Office Space
Earth to the Moon
The Quiet Man
Saving Private Ryan
Father Goose (Cary Grant & Leslie Cheron... cheesy but for some reason a favorite)
Blazing Sadles
Ronin
Master and Commander...

Interesting, since it was filmed in Dallas. The opening scene was done on I-635 if I remember correctly. I once worked in one of the buildings in the background in one shot. BTW I think my company's office is in the office park that was used for all the exteriour shots. It looks *SO* dead-on. I'll have to watch again and nail down some landmarks so I can test this theory.

Brad, the red Swingline is now available. It was actually not produced before the film (they painted one that was originally another colour), but there was enough demand to see it get produced.

Movies

I was just looking over my little list and noticed that 3 out of my 4 favorite John Wayne movies co-star Maureen O'Harra... Maybe I'm not so much a John Wayne fan as I am a Maureen O'Harra fan??? I'd certainly rate her near the top of the list for all time "Hollywood Hotties". Another old time star that was so stunningly attractive that it nearly boggles the mind was Grace Kelly..

Taxi Driver too probably.

No Ghostbusters?

The original Ghostbusters just cracks me up. Especially the scene on top of the building when they are getting their butts kicks and they are asked if they are a god. With a no answer and more butt kicking the retort is: "If anyone asks you if you are a god, say YES!" :)

Very interesting responses everyone! Being the multifacted weirdo that I am, I've had a hard time wrapping my brain around this topic. Just when I think I can make a list, I realise that at midnight I'll awake and spring bolt-upright in bed screaming about 100 titles that I forgot.
So here's a thread-hijack: what are you r favourite films that are so beyond BAD that they are HILARIOUS?

I would have to say "the last polka", about the schmenge bros. It has John Candy and some of the cast of SCTV. A great parody.
