A Sunday Drive: Flowers, Highways and Lady Bird Johnson

The enjoyment we derive from our searches for the perfect ride owes so much to former First Lady Bird Johnson. Her determination and dedication to beatification of the American land by paying attention to litter, billboards and junk yards that were rapidly obscuring in large part lead to the Highway Beatification Act. The famous television advertisement of a Native American, with a single tear rolling down his cheek, as we the American public threw trash out our car windows as we drove along was far from a melodramatic overstatement of the need.

At the time Lady Bird was often seen as a bit preachy. People would grumble as sissy beautification changes seemed to be forced on us in a day and age when consumption and power at their rawest peak. The issues she addressed in her campaign were not seen as evils but rather as rights that had been hard won in the ever growing post war consumer economy. They were signs of how far we had come. Yet slowly we began policing each other. The local costs of beautification started to shrink in our minds as we began to recognize the esthetic benefit.

Lady Bird was one of the first modern first ladies to take on a cause. It may seem trivial when compared to predecessors like Eleanor Roosevelt or first ladies that followed her. I believe that she helped give us something of enormous value; a context of natural beauty in our countryside in which to contemplate where we want to go and what we value personally and as a country.

No matter what your political bent, those of us who value the mental, spiritual and pure pleasure benefits of throwing a leg across our bikes and going for a good ride in the country, owe Lady Bird Johnson a big debt of thanks.

Miguel Duhamel, No.1 highsides on his Honda CBR600R in turn one as he led the Daytona 200 at Daytona International Speedway, Saturday, March 11, 2006 He returned to the race to finish fourth. (Daytona Beach News-Journal,)

THE END

A breakthrough technology developed by three engineering lads in Wales could hold the key to converting carbon emissions into beneficial substances such as biodiesel, methane gas, and fertilizer. The cleverly-dubbed Greenbox was designed to be fixed underneath one's vehicle where it could gobble up carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide until the next fill up, at which point the box would be switched out for a new one while the filled canister headed to a bioreactor for processing. Sounds complicated, we know, but strapping these bad boys beneath every gasoline-powered vehicle in a given nation could boost its biofuel production exponentially -- all without spending another penny (or pence) on research. Unsurprisingly, the trio of inventors are staying mum until they (hopefully) convince the government or a private company to grab ahold, but unless these boxes learn to swap themselves, we can't imagine too many individuals bustin' out the creeper for underbody work at each fuel stop.

There has to be a way to make this easy. At Daytona and other NASCAR events the pit crew can rebuild a car faster than the driver can drink a quart of milk. Give the job to GIVI. They are masters of the quick disconnect.
