Marc Parnes BA12 rear wheel adapter question for the hive

I've got the BA12 wheel balancer for the rear wheel of the r1200rs. I'm under the impression that if I were to need a new tire on the road and could find a non bwm dealer in the area, they would be able to use this adapter to change the tire/balance the wheel afterward.

Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki dealers as an example.

Am I correct in the above understanding or wet behind the ears on this subject.

TIA

It is my understanding that you are correct in your assumption. I had sidewall flat on a 1150 Roadster in a previous life in Oregon and had to replace the tyre. The local strip mall bike shop could mount the tyre and only balanced it as best they could. They recommended I properly check the balance when I got home with a proper adaptor.

No one else can verify the Parnes adapter will work at non bmw dealers to be able to change/balance our rear tires?

A quick search looks like most of the balancers look the same- two upright arms. I can’t see why only the adapters are special. :dunno

The BA12 adapter is designed for use with any balancer that uses a shaft and two cones, each smaller than 20mm at the narrow end, to support the wheel. That covers the typical balancers found at most shops, but doesn’t guarantee that all shops would be able to deploy the BA12. If the OP wants an ironclad guarantee that he’ll be able to balance the wheel on the road he should purchase and pack the Marc Parnes Balancer Kit and the adapter to fit his bike. But if it were my bike, I’d pack just the BA12 and not worry about it—if dealer A can mount the tire but not balance it, have the tire mounted and ride down the road to a shop that can balance the wheel/tire.

Best,
DeVern

Maybe call the dealer of the balancer?
BTDT, he says the part is necessary to balance the bmw rear wheels at other than bmw dealerships who won't have the adapter for their machines. Trying to verify if any member has used this product. Apparently not many even know about the product.

Interesting

Different makers wheels have various OD hub dimensions. The place I used to go to sold Euro and japanese motorcycles as well as serviced bmw's. I watched one of his mechanics have to pick the correct hub balancer to work on whatever model he was assigned next if different than his last work. I'm surprised not a lot of people know this.

As an example, the one I bought for the 11RT also works on the 07GT, but not my 16RS. Wheel and tires are the same size but the hub diameter is different.

I purchased the Marc Parnes balancer and BMW adapter several years ago. My reasoning at the time was because of my strip mall tyre shop experience (explained in previous post, above). The mallmekanik didn't have ability to accurately balance the wheel with the replacement tyre. My theory at the time was that I would carry the BMW adaptor in my ever burgeoning toolkit in case of another sidewall puncture. Sometimes I remember to pack the adapter on long trips, oftentimes I forget.

Here's a shot of the cone balancer with a rear wheel from my ex-Suzuki DRZ 400. The BMW adaptor has never been called into service, just like the Israeli Bandage that I carry in my first aid kit. I'm perfectly happy with the cone balancer, it's a nice piece of kit.

My two cents. The Mark Parnes hub should work with almost anybody's balancing machine that uses two cones at the hub. Due to its retention design I would absolutely not trust it to be used as a center hold-down for mounting and dismounting a tire though.

This picture makes me think that with the proper wheel adapter, I could use my 5 ton jack stands to support the/a wheel and adapter. 🤔

In case you're interested, this is what the Suzi DRZ400 wheel looked like on a set of old Sears 3 ton jack stands. Along with a Baja No Pinch device (which worked well BTW). I worked with what I had.

The Marc Parnes BA12 adapter is designed for use with a static balancer using cones, shaft, and bearings. If the place you have the tire mounted, uses a static balancer, it should work, if their's has the same shaft diameter. It is not designed to work with a spin balancer machine. Also, keep in mind, there are separate BMW adapters for cast vs spoked wheels. DAMHIK

I have the Barnes adapters and with the Barnes shaft and lock nuts will fit on any static balancer. If you order one with the bearings, you can use anything that's tall enough for the wheel. See the web site, he makes very high quality parts.
